Recently, India announced its plan to integrate the advanced Astra Mk2 missile with the Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force. The missile is capable of intercepting enemy aircraft at a distance of up to 240 kilometres, allowing Indian fighter jets to engage hostile targets far beyond visual range.
About Astra Mk2 Missile
The Astra Mk2 is an advanced Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile being developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Astra Mk-1 and Astra Mk2
The earlier version of the missile, known as Astra Mk-1, is already operational in the Indian Air Force.
It has been integrated with advanced fighter aircraft such as:

The Astra Mk-1 missile has an operational strike range of around 90–110 kilometres.
The new Astra Mk2 is a more advanced and powerful version that offers a much greater strike range and improved combat performance. It is expected to provide the Indian Air Force with a significant strategic advantage in air-to-air combat situations.
Features of Astra Mk2 Missile
One of the most important technological improvements in Astra Mk2 is the use of a dual-pulse solid rocket motor.
The Astra Mk-1 uses a single-pulse smokeless solid-fuel motor, whereas the Astra Mk2 uses a dual-pulse propulsion system. This advanced propulsion mechanism allows the missile to maintain better speed and energy during the final stage of attack, thereby improving its effectiveness against highly maneuverable enemy aircraft.

Indigenous Seeker Technology
The Astra Mk2 missile will use an indigenous seeker developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Recently, the Chenchu Tribe living in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve opposed relocation from forest areas because of concerns related to their traditional livelihood, dependence on forests, and cultural identity.
About the Chenchu Tribe
The Chenchu tribe is an indigenous tribal community that mainly inhabits the Nallamalai forests of Andhra Pradesh. They are recognized as one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of the state due to their socio-economic backwardness and dependence on forest resources.
Apart from Andhra Pradesh, the Chenchu population is also found in Telangana, Karnataka, and Odisha. Anthropologically, the Chenchus are classified under the Proto-Australoid racial group.
Language
The Chenchu people speak different variants of Telugu, which belongs to the Dravidian language family. Their language and communication patterns are closely influenced by the regional culture of southern India.
Social Structure
A traditional Chenchu village is known as a “Penta.” Each penta usually consists of a small number of huts that are located at some distance from one another and are grouped according to kinship relations.
The Chenchu society is mainly based on small conjugal families. Women enjoy an equal social status with men, and marriages generally take place only after attaining maturity.
The village elder, known as the “Peddamanishi,” acts as the traditional authority responsible for maintaining social harmony and resolving disputes within the community.
Livelihood and Economy
The Chenchus lead a life of simplicity and continue to depend heavily on forests for their survival. A large section of the community still gathers food directly from forests and moves through forest areas to meet their daily requirements.
They collect various minor forest products such as roots, fruits, tubers, beedi leaves, mahua flowers, honey, gum, tamarind, and green leaves. These forest products are sold to traders and government cooperatives, providing them with a limited source of income.
Their close relationship with forests makes forest conservation policies and relocation issues highly significant for their survival and traditional way of life.
Religion and Beliefs
The Chenchus worship several local deities and also follow certain religious practices associated with Hinduism.
They mainly believe in Bhagaban Taru, who is believed to reside in the sky, and Garelamai Sama, who is regarded as the Goddess of the Forest.
For centuries, the Chenchu tribe has maintained a strong association with the famous Srisailam Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Devi Brahmaramba. The temple is located in the heart of the traditional Chenchu region and holds deep religious and cultural importance for the tribe.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) recently started the bidding process for the development of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) pipeline infrastructure in the country. The initiative aims to reduce the large-scale transportation of LPG through roads and encourage a safer, more efficient, and cost-effective pipeline network for the distribution of petroleum products.
About PNGRB
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is a statutory body established under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act, 2006.
The main objective of the Board is to protect the interests of consumers and entities involved in activities related to petroleum, petroleum products, and natural gas. It also works to promote fair competition and competitive markets in the energy sector.
PNGRB has been given the responsibility to regulate activities such as the refining, processing, storage, transportation, distribution, marketing, and sale of petroleum, petroleum products, and natural gas.
However, the production of crude oil and natural gas does not come under the jurisdiction of the Board.
The Board also ensures an adequate, uninterrupted, and equitable supply of petroleum and natural gas throughout the country.
Functions of PNGRB
PNGRB plays a crucial role in the regulation and development of India’s petroleum and natural gas infrastructure.
The Board authorizes the establishment and operation of:
City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks
Natural gas pipelines
Petroleum product pipelines
It is also responsible for:
determining pipeline tariffs,
framing technical and safety standards, and
monitoring compliance in the sector.
Through these functions, the Board helps ensure the safe and efficient delivery of petroleum and natural gas services.
Entities Regulated by PNGRB
Several entities working in the petroleum and natural gas sector are required to follow PNGRB regulations.
These include:
operators of natural gas and petroleum product pipelines,
City Gas Distribution networks,
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage and regasification facilities,
petroleum and gas marketing companies, and
refineries and storage terminals.
Nodal Ministry and Headquarters
The nodal ministry responsible for PNGRB is the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The headquarters of the Board is located in New Delhi.
Composition of the Board
The members of PNGRB are appointed by the Central Government.
The Board consists of:
a Chairperson,
one Member (Legal), and
three additional members.
Powers of PNGRB
Under Section 12 of the PNGRB Act, 2006, the Board has been given important powers to deal with complaints and resolve disputes among entities in the petroleum and natural gas sector.
The Board has the authority to:
adjudicate disputes among entities,
conduct inquiries and investigations on receiving complaints,
issue directions and pass orders, and
refer matters for investigation whenever necessary.
PNGRB also enjoys powers similar to those of a Civil Court under the Civil Procedure Code, 1908.
