Magnetar

Why in the News?

Recently, a magnetar named 1E 1547.0−5408 has provided the strongest observational evidence so far that an intense magnetic field can alter how light travels through otherwise empty space.

About Magnetars

Magnetars are a type of neutron star characterised by extraordinarily strong magnetic fields, much stronger than Earth's magnetic field.

Formation of Magnetars

Magnetars form through the core collapse of massive stars during supernova explosions, similar to other neutron stars.

The idea of a magnetar was first proposed in 1987. It was subsequently used to explain Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) in 1992.

Key Characteristics of Magnetars

1. Extremely Strong Magnetic Fields: Magnetars possess magnetic fields estimated to be approximately 1,000 times stronger than those of typical neutron stars and over one quadrillion times stronger than Earth's magnetic field.

2. Source of Energy: The emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation from magnetars is powered by the decay of their intense magnetic fields.

3. Slow Rotation and Rapid Spin-Down: Magnetars generally rotate relatively slowly and can lose their rotational speed over time.

4. Bursts and Outbursts: They exhibit strong temporal variability, including bright, short-duration bursts and outbursts that may continue for months.

5. Intense Flares: Magnetars can occasionally release enormous amounts of energy through intense flares.
