A sub-committee on health insurance, headed by the Chairman of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), considered measures to encourage insurers and hospitals to join the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX).
The National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) is a digital platform developed under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
It has been developed by the National Health Authority (NHA) in consultation with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).
NHCX serves as a common gateway for exchanging health insurance claim information among insurers, third-party administrators, healthcare providers, beneficiaries and other relevant entities.
The primary objective of NHCX is to streamline and standardise health insurance claim processing across India. It uses Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards to enable interoperability among different digital healthcare and insurance systems.
Healthcare providers can verify whether a particular treatment is covered by a patient's health insurance policy. This helps reduce uncertainty about insurance coverage and unexpected expenses.
Hospitals can submit pre-authorisation requests to insurers to obtain approval before commencing treatment, wherever required.
Healthcare providers can request an estimate of the benefits payable for a proposed treatment before it begins.
Hospitals can submit insurance claims in a standardised digital format, making it easier for insurers to process and assess them.
Hospitals can check the payment status of submitted claims, improving transparency and communication between healthcare providers and insurers.
Healthcare providers can raise questions or request additional information through the exchange, facilitating communication between the parties involved in claim processing.
If a claim encounters problems, healthcare providers can request its review or reprocessing to help resolve the issue.
Faster Claim Processing: Standardised digital exchanges can reduce administrative delays and simplify health insurance claim settlement.
Interoperability: The use of FHIR standards facilitates the exchange of information between different healthcare and insurance systems.
Transparency and Accountability: Digital claim tracking and communication can improve visibility into claim status and payment processing.
Improved Patient Experience: Better coordination between hospitals and insurers can reduce uncertainty regarding coverage, approvals and claim settlement.
Digital Healthcare Integration: NHCX supports the broader objective of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission by strengthening digital connectivity across India's healthcare ecosystem.
