Economists have recently emphasized the critical role of inward remittances in maintaining India's external sector stability. At a time when the global economy is facing uncertainty, Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPIs) remain volatile and India's merchandise trade deficit continues to widen, remittances have emerged as a crucial pillar supporting the country's Balance of Payments (BoP) and overall macroeconomic resilience.

How do Remittances Anchor India's External Balances?

Cushioning the Current Account Deficit (CAD)

To understand the importance of remittances, it is necessary to examine the structure of the Balance of Payments (BoP). The BoP records all economic transactions between a country and the rest of the world and is broadly divided into the Current Account and the Capital Account.

Within the Current Account, remittances are classified under "Invisibles", which include services, income, and transfers. More specifically, remittances are recorded as private transfers or personal transfers, forming a part of Net Secondary Income (NSI).

India has traditionally been a Current Account Deficit (CAD) economy, primarily due to its large and persistent merchandise trade deficit. The country's merchandise trade gap increased dramatically from approximately USD 6 billion in 2000–01 to nearly USD 284 billion in 2024–25.

In this context, remittances act as a non-debt creating source of foreign exchange, helping to offset a substantial portion of the trade deficit. During 2024–25, inward remittances covered approximately 47.5% of India's merchandise trade deficit. By reducing the pressure created by import payments, remittances help keep the Current Account Deficit within manageable limits, generally considered safe when maintained below 2.5% of GDP.

In fact, since 2013, remittance inflows have, on average, financed more than the entire volume of India's merchandise trade deficit, highlighting their indispensable role in maintaining external balance.

Stabilising the Indian Rupee

Unlike Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPIs), which are often referred to as "hot money" because of their tendency to flow rapidly in and out of economies in response to changing global conditions, remittances are generally stable and predictable.

Migrant workers and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) regularly send foreign currencies such as US Dollars, Euros, and UAE Dirhams to support their families in India. When these currencies are converted into Indian Rupees (INR) for domestic expenditure, they generate a steady demand for the Indian currency.

This continuous inflow of foreign exchange acts as a buffer against sharp depreciations of the rupee, particularly during periods of global financial turbulence, such as US Federal Reserve interest rate hikes or episodes of capital flight from emerging markets.

Significance of Remittances for the Indian Economy

Non-Debt Creating Capital

One of the most important characteristics of remittances is that they are non-debt creating inflows. Unlike External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs), which must eventually be repaid, or Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), which involves future profit repatriation, remittances are private transfers that do not create future financial liabilities.

Support to Foreign Exchange Reserves

The continuous inflow of remittances also supports the accumulation and maintenance of India's foreign exchange reserves.

Since remittances increase the availability of foreign currency in the domestic market, they reduce the necessity for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to intervene aggressively in foreign exchange markets to stabilise the rupee.

Contribution to Socio-Economic Development

The impact of remittances extends beyond macroeconomic stability and directly influences the welfare of households.

At the micro level, remittance income enhances household consumption, improves access to healthcare and education, and raises the overall standard of living for recipient families.

Several Indian states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, have historically experienced substantial developmental benefits from remittance inflows, leading to improvements in human development indicators and regional economic growth.

What are Remittances?

Remittances refer to cross-border financial transfers made by migrant workers and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to their families and communities in their home country.

These transfers are predominantly motivated by altruistic considerations, such as supporting family members, financing education, meeting healthcare expenses, or contributing to household needs. Since they are driven largely by familial obligations rather than profit motives, remittances tend to remain stable even during periods of economic uncertainty.

Regulatory Framework Governing Remittances

In India, all foreign exchange transactions are regulated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999.

Under FEMA, the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) permits resident Indians to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year for specified personal and investment purposes. Larger remittances require prior approval from the RBI.

However, the LRS prohibits remittances intended for activities such as gambling, speculative trading, and terrorist financing.

For receiving remittances, Non-Resident Indians may utilise various banking channels, including Non-Resident External (NRE) Accounts, Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) Accounts, and Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) Accounts.

Status of Remittances in India

India has consistently remained the largest recipient of remittances in the world since 2008.

According to available estimates, remittance inflows reached approximately USD 135 billion during 2024–25, surpassing even gross Foreign Direct Investment inflows. This trend has persisted for much of the period between 2000–01 and 2024–25, underlining the growing significance of remittances in India's external sector.

Changing Pattern of India's Remittance Sources

The Reserve Bank of India's Remittances Survey (2025), covering the period from 2016–17 to 2023–24, indicates a significant structural transformation in India's remittance profile.

A notable trend is the increasing dominance of advanced economies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada, and Australia, which collectively account for more than half of India's total remittance inflows.

The United States has overtaken the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the largest individual source of remittances to India. Its share increased from 22.9% to 27.7%, while the UAE's contribution declined from 26.9% to 19.2%.

Simultaneously, the overall share of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has fallen to approximately 38%.

This shift reflects a transition from dependence on semi-skilled and unskilled migrant workers in the Gulf to increasing reliance on high-skilled professionals employed in advanced economies, particularly in sectors such as information technology, healthcare, finance, and engineering.

Concerns Associated with Remittance Dependence

Despite their importance, several emerging risks threaten the sustainability of remittance inflows.

India's growing dependence on advanced economies exposes remittances to changes in immigration policies, tightening visa regulations, and labour market restrictions in host countries.

Moreover, the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation technologies may adversely affect high-skilled jobs, particularly in the technology sector, which currently contributes significantly to remittance earnings.

At the same time, geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region and increasing nationalisation policies aimed at promoting local employment could reduce opportunities for Indian migrant workers engaged in blue-collar occupations.

Any significant slowdown in remittance inflows, especially during periods characterised by declining FDI and volatile FPI flows, could widen India's Current Account Deficit and place additional downward pressure on the Indian Rupee.

Conclusion

Remittances have emerged as an indispensable pillar of India's external sector stability. They not only help finance the country's large merchandise trade deficit but also contribute to exchange rate stability, strengthen foreign exchange reserves, and support millions of households across the country.


 

Kukke Subrahmanya Temple

Recently, the famous Kukke Sri Subrahmanya Temple in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka recorded its highest-ever annual revenue of ₹167.89 crore during 2025–26. The temple is renowned across India as a major centre of Nagaradhana (serpent worship) and attracts lakhs of devotees every year, particularly those seeking relief from Sarpa Dosha through special rituals.

About Kukke Subrahmanya Temple

The Kukke Subrahmanya Temple is an ancient Hindu shrine believed to be nearly 5,000 years old. It is located in the village of Subrahmanya in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

The temple is situated on the picturesque banks of the Kumaradhara River, at the foothills of Kumara Parvatha, amidst the lush forests of the Western Ghats. The serene natural surroundings add to the spiritual significance of the shrine and make it an important religious as well as cultural destination in southern India.

Presiding Deity

The principal deity worshipped in the temple is Lord Subrahmanya, who is also widely known by names such as Kartikeya, Murugan, and Skanda. In Hindu tradition, Lord Subrahmanya is regarded as the God of War and the commander of the celestial army.

At Kukke Subrahmanya, however, he is uniquely revered as the Lord of all Serpents (Nagas). According to temple beliefs, Lord Subrahmanya protects the serpent king Vasuki and other Nagas, making this shrine one of the most significant centres of Sarpa worship in India.

Importance as a Centre of Nagaradhana

The temple is considered one of the foremost centres for Nagaradhana (serpent worship) in the country. Devotees from different parts of India visit the temple to perform rituals associated with the worship of serpent deities.

Special ceremonies such as Sarpa Samskara, Ashlesha Bali, and Naga Prathishta are conducted to seek relief from Sarpa Dosha, a condition believed in Hindu astrology to arise due to the displeasure of serpent deities or ancestral karmic influences.

These rituals have contributed significantly to the temple's prominence and popularity among devotees.

Puranic Significance

According to Puranic traditions, Kukke Subrahmanya is regarded as one of the seven sacred places established by Sage Parashurama after he reclaimed the land of present-day Kerala and parts of coastal Karnataka from the sea.

Legends associated with the temple state that after defeating the demon Tarakasura, Lord Subrahmanya came to this region. It is believed that Vasuki, the king of serpents, sought refuge under Lord Subrahmanya's protection at this very site. Consequently, the deity came to be worshipped together with the serpent king.

These legends have greatly enhanced the religious significance of the temple over centuries.

Architectural Features

The temple reflects the characteristics of classical Dravidian architecture. The structure is adorned with ornately carved pillars, imposing gateways, and traditional design elements commonly associated with South Indian temple architecture.

The sanctum sanctorum exudes simplicity and spiritual serenity, creating an atmosphere conducive to devotion and meditation.

Within the temple complex, there are dedicated spaces for performing various religious ceremonies and rituals. The premises also contain smaller shrines devoted to other deities, further enriching the spiritual landscape of the temple.

Geographical Setting

One of the distinctive features of the Kukke Subrahmanya Temple is its location within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its exceptional biodiversity.

The temple lies near Kumara Parvatha, one of Karnataka's most popular trekking destinations, and along the Kumaradhara River, whose waters are considered sacred by devotees. Pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip in the river before entering the temple for worship.

Cultural and Religious Significance

The Kukke Subrahmanya Temple occupies a special place in the religious life of southern India. It represents the synthesis of mainstream Hindu traditions with ancient serpent worship practices, reflecting the diversity and continuity of India's cultural heritage.

The temple's growing popularity, as reflected in its record revenue collections, highlights its enduring relevance as a centre of faith, pilgrimage, and cultural identity.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

The animal was later released into the forest region of the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, ensuring both public safety and the conservation of the species.

About Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

The Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It forms an integral part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which in turn constitutes a significant component of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, one of India's most important biodiversity hotspots.

Tholpetty represents the northern segment of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is divided into two discontinuous sectors, namely Tholpetty in the north and Muthanga in the south, separated by inhabited regions and agricultural landscapes.

Its strategic location within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contributes immensely to its rich ecological diversity and conservation significance.

Flora of Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary supports a diverse range of forest ecosystems, primarily comprising tropical moist deciduous forests, dry deciduous forests, and patches of semi-evergreen forests.

These varied vegetation types provide suitable habitats for numerous wildlife species and help maintain ecological balance within the region.

In addition to natural forests, approximately one-third of the sanctuary area is covered by plantations. These include commercially important tree species such as teak, eucalyptus, silver oak, and rosewood.

The combination of natural forests and plantations contributes to the distinctive landscape of the sanctuary.

Faunal Diversity

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for its rich wildlife population and serves as an important refuge for several mammalian species.

Large mammals frequently observed in the sanctuary include Asian elephants, tigers, leopards (panthers), gaurs, sloth bears, wild dogs, jungle cats, civet cats, various species of deer, and several species of primates.

The sanctuary also supports a diverse reptilian population, including numerous species of snakes, thereby enhancing its ecological importance.

Birdlife in the Sanctuary

Tholpetty is considered a paradise for birdwatchers, hosting more than 300 species of birds.

Among its notable avian inhabitants are the Malabar Grey Hornbill, an endemic species of the Western Ghats, the Crested Serpent Eagle, Indian Peafowl, and several species of woodpeckers and kingfishers.

The rich bird diversity reflects the healthy ecological conditions prevailing within the sanctuary.

Ecological Significance

As part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Tholpetty plays a crucial role in facilitating wildlife movement and genetic exchange among protected areas of the Western Ghats.

The sanctuary contributes significantly to the conservation of flagship species such as the tiger and the Asian elephant, while simultaneously preserving numerous lesser-known species of plants and animals.

It also serves as an important buffer against increasing human-wildlife conflicts by providing secure habitats for wild animals.

Key Facts about Gaur

About

The gaur, commonly referred to as the Indian bison, is the largest extant species of wild cattle belonging to the family Bovidae.

Its scientific name is Bos gaurus.

Distribution and Habitat

Gaurs are native to South and Southeast Asia and are distributed across countries such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, and parts of China.

They predominantly inhabit evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests, especially those interspersed with open grasslands.

Gaurs generally prefer hilly terrains below elevations of 1,500–1,800 metres, provided there are extensive undisturbed forests and reliable sources of water.

Physical Characteristics

The gaur is a massively built animal characterized by its robust body structure.

It possesses a short but muscular neck, a large head, and often exhibits a prominent dewlap extending across the throat and chest region.

The body colour varies from reddish-brown to dark black, while the lower portions of the legs are typically pale or whitish, giving the appearance of wearing "stockings."

Both males and females possess horns, which emerge from the sides of the head and curve upward gracefully. These horns generally display a yellowish base with black tips.

Another distinctive feature is the pronounced muscular hump over the shoulders, particularly noticeable in mature bulls.

Conservation Status

The gaur is currently classified as "Vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, indicating that the species faces a high risk of extinction in the wild if existing threats continue unchecked.

Major threats to gaur populations include habitat fragmentation, disease transmission from domestic livestock, poaching, and increasing instances of human-wildlife conflict.

The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) was launched by the Government of India in 2014–15 under the framework of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). The mission was conceived as a strategic intervention to address the growing challenges posed by climate variability and climate change to the agricultural sector. Its primary objective is to make Indian agriculture more resilient, productive, sustainable, and adaptive while ensuring long-term food security and livelihood security for farmers.

Since 2022–23, the mission has been implemented under the umbrella of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PMRKVY). The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare serves as the nodal ministry responsible for the implementation of the mission across the country.

Objectives of NMSA

The mission seeks to promote climate-resilient agricultural practices by encouraging the efficient use of natural resources and improving farmers' adaptive capacities. It focuses on enhancing water-use efficiency, improving soil health, conserving natural resources, and promoting integrated farming systems that can withstand climatic uncertainties. Through these interventions, the mission aims to ensure that agricultural development remains both economically viable and environmentally sustainable.

Recent Development

In a significant move towards sustainable water management in agriculture, the Government has set a target of bringing 100 lakh hectares of agricultural land under micro-irrigation during the period from 2025–26 to 2029–30 under the mission. This initiative is expected to improve irrigation efficiency, reduce water wastage, and increase agricultural productivity, particularly in water-stressed regions.

Key Interventions under NMSA

Rainfed Area Development (RAD)

The Rainfed Area Development (RAD) component promotes the adoption of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in rainfed regions of the country. Instead of relying solely on crop cultivation, farmers are encouraged to integrate activities such as horticulture, livestock rearing, fisheries, and agroforestry. Such diversification not only enhances farm income but also reduces the risks associated with climate-induced crop failures, thereby making farming systems more resilient and sustainable.

Per Drop More Crop (PDMC)

The Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) initiative focuses on enhancing water-use efficiency through the promotion of micro-irrigation technologies, particularly drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems. By ensuring that every drop of water is used optimally, the scheme seeks to increase agricultural output while conserving precious water resources. This component assumes particular importance in the context of increasing water scarcity and changing rainfall patterns.

Soil Health Management (SHM)

The Soil Health Management (SHM) component aims to maintain and improve the fertility and productivity of agricultural soils. It supports the implementation of the Soil Health Card (SHC) Scheme, under which farmers receive scientific recommendations regarding nutrient requirements based on soil testing. By promoting the balanced use of fertilizers and integrated nutrient management practices, the scheme contributes to the long-term sustainability of agricultural production systems.

Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture: Monitoring, Modelling and Networking (CCSAMMN)

The Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture: Monitoring, Modelling and Networking (CCSAMMN) component facilitates the generation, dissemination, and exchange of climate-related information and knowledge. It establishes a two-way communication mechanism between farmers and scientific institutions, enabling the transfer of research findings to the field while also incorporating farmers' experiences into policy and research. This initiative supports the development of climate adaptation strategies, capacity building, and evidence-based decision-making in agriculture.

Significance of NMSA

The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture occupies a crucial place in India's efforts to achieve sustainable agricultural development in the face of climate change. Since a substantial proportion of Indian agriculture remains dependent on rainfall, improving the resilience of farming systems has become imperative. By promoting resource conservation, efficient water management, soil health improvement, and climate-smart agricultural practices, the mission contributes to enhancing both agricultural productivity and farmers' adaptive capacity.

Furthermore, the mission aligns with India's broader commitments under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, thereby integrating agricultural development with national climate objectives.
