The National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) was launched by the Government of India in 2014–15 under the framework of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). The mission was conceived as a strategic intervention to address the growing challenges posed by climate variability and climate change to the agricultural sector. Its primary objective is to make Indian agriculture more resilient, productive, sustainable, and adaptive while ensuring long-term food security and livelihood security for farmers.
Since 2022–23, the mission has been implemented under the umbrella of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PMRKVY). The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare serves as the nodal ministry responsible for the implementation of the mission across the country.
Objectives of NMSA

Recent Development
In a significant move towards sustainable water management in agriculture, the Government has set a target of bringing 100 lakh hectares of agricultural land under micro-irrigation during the period from 2025–26 to 2029–30 under the mission. Rainfed Area Development (RAD)
The Rainfed Area Development (RAD) component promotes the adoption of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) in rainfed regions of the country. Instead of relying solely on crop cultivation, farmers are encouraged to integrate activities such as horticulture, livestock rearing, fisheries, and agroforestry. The Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) initiative focuses on enhancing water-use efficiency through the promotion of micro-irrigation technologies, particularly drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems. By ensuring that every drop of water is used optimally, the scheme seeks to increase agricultural output while conserving precious water resources. This component assumes particular importance in the context of increasing water scarcity and changing rainfall patterns.
Soil Health Management (SHM)
The Soil Health Management (SHM) component aims to maintain and improve the fertility and productivity of agricultural soils. It supports the implementation of the Soil Health Card (SHC) Scheme, under which farmers receive scientific recommendations regarding nutrient requirements based on soil testing. By promoting the balanced use of fertilizers and integrated nutrient management practices, the scheme contributes to the long-term sustainability of agricultural production systems.
Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture: Monitoring, Modelling and Networking (CCSAMMN)
The Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture: Monitoring, Modelling and Networking (CCSAMMN) component facilitates the generation, dissemination, and exchange of climate-related information and knowledge. It establishes a two-way communication mechanism between farmers and scientific institutions, enabling the transfer of research findings to the field while also incorporating farmers' experiences into policy and research. This initiative supports the development of climate adaptation strategies, capacity building, and evidence-based decision-making in agriculture.
