Sustainable Agriculture refers to farming systems that meet present food and fibre needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It seeks to balance agricultural productivity, environmental conservation and farmer livelihoods. The concept gained global recognition through the Brundtland Report (1987).
Sustainable Agriculture in India
In India, sustainable agriculture has become important due to soil degradation, groundwater depletion, climate variability and rising input costs. Intensive use of chemical fertilisers, HYV seeds and irrigation has affected soil health and agricultural resilience. Approaches such as organic farming, Zero Budget Natural Farming, agroforestry and System of Rice Intensification aim to improve resource efficiency and long-term productivity.
Major Sustainable Farming Practices
Crop Rotation
Crop rotation involves growing different crops successively on the same land. It helps maintain soil nutrients, break pest and disease cycles and reduce dependence on fertilisers, particularly when nitrogen-fixing legumes are included.
Organic Farming
Organic farming avoids synthetic fertilisers and pesticides and relies on compost, animal manure, crop residues and biological pest control to improve soil health and reduce chemical pollution.
Agroforestry
Agroforestry integrates trees with crops or livestock. It enhances carbon sequestration, biodiversity and soil conservation while providing farmers with additional sources of income such as fruits, timber and fodder.
Zero Budget Natural Farming
Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) promotes the use of locally available natural inputs and reduces dependence on purchased chemical inputs. It aims to improve soil microbial activity and reduce cultivation costs.
System of Rice Intensification
SRI improves rice cultivation through younger seedlings, wider spacing, reduced water use and improved soil aeration. It seeks to increase productivity while improving water-use efficiency.
Integrated Pest Management
IPM focuses on preventing and controlling pests through crop rotation, biological control and natural predators, thereby reducing dependence on chemical pesticides and lowering production costs.
Conservation Agriculture
Conservation agriculture is based on minimum tillage, permanent soil cover and crop diversification. It helps reduce soil erosion, conserve moisture and maintain long-term soil productivity.

NMSA, launched under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, focuses on rainfed-area development, soil health, water-use efficiency, climate-resilient farming and integrated farming systems.
Sub-Mission on Agroforestry
SMAF promotes the integration of trees with crops and livestock, supporting carbon sequestration, biodiversity, farm diversification and additional income.
RKVY and MOVCDNER
Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) provides support for sustainable agriculture, innovation and infrastructure, while Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER) promotes organic production, certification, processing and marketing in the Northeast.

Major Challenges
Economic and Productivity Constraints
The transition to sustainable agriculture can involve higher labour requirements and initial investment. Some farmers may also experience lower yields during the initial transition period, creating concerns about income stability.
Market and Infrastructure Constraints
Limited certification, storage, processing facilities and market access can prevent farmers from receiving better prices for sustainably produced goods.
Knowledge and Policy Gaps
Insufficient extension services, technical knowledge, awareness and appropriate incentives continue to restrict large-scale adoption.
Way Forward
Reduce Transition Risks
Providing financial incentives, crop insurance and targeted input support can encourage farmers to shift towards sustainable practices without bearing excessive transition risks.
Strengthen Research and Extension
Greater investment in climate-resilient crops, location-specific technologies, low-cost sustainable inputs and farmer training can improve productivity and adoption.

Policies should strengthen the participation of women farmers and smallholders while promoting efficient land and water management. The overall objective should be to achieve a balance between productivity, profitability, environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
The Battle of Khanwa was fought on 16 March 1527 near Khanwa in present-day Rajasthan between Babur and the Rajput-Afghan confederacy led by Rana Sanga of Mewar. The battle followed Babur’s victory at the First Battle of Panipat (1526) and became a decisive struggle for political supremacy in North India.
Causes of the Battle
After Panipat, Babur intended to establish a permanent empire in India, which threatened the growing power of Rana Sanga. Sanga, then the most powerful Rajput ruler, brought together a large Rajput-Afghan confederacy to challenge Mughal expansion. The conflict was further intensified by disputed claims regarding an earlier understanding between Babur and Rana Sanga.
Major Leaders
Babur commanded the Mughal army and relied heavily on artillery, firearms, defensive fortifications and tactical manoeuvres. Rana Sanga led the Rajput confederacy, supported by Mahmud Lodi, Hasan Khan Mewati and several Rajput chiefs.
Course of the Battle
Babur fortified his position at Khanwa using chained carts, trenches and defensive barriers, placing musketeers and artillery behind them. The Rajput forces relied primarily on powerful cavalry charges and close combat. Mughal gunpowder weapons and artillery disrupted repeated Rajput attacks and prevented them from effectively breaking through Babur’s defensive positions.
When Rana Sanga was wounded and lost consciousness, Jhala Ajja reportedly assumed his identity to maintain the morale of the Rajput army. However, sustained Mughal artillery fire weakened the Rajput formations, allowing Babur to launch a decisive counteroffensive.
Outcome and Significance
The battle ended in a decisive Mughal victory, eliminating the strongest immediate challenge to Babur’s authority after Panipat. It weakened the Rajput confederacy, ended Rana Sanga’s attempt to establish supremacy over North India and strengthened Mughal control over the Delhi–Agra region.
Khanwa also demonstrated the growing importance of gunpowder warfare, firearms and field artillery in Indian battles. Babur’s effective combination of defensive tactics, artillery and manoeuvring gave the Mughals a major military advantage over the traditional cavalry-based Rajput forces.
Aftermath
Rana Sanga survived the battle but was severely wounded. He later died in 1528 at Kalpi, according to the account provided. Babur subsequently consolidated his position through campaigns such as the Battle of Chanderi (1528) and the Battle of Ghagra (1529).
Historical Significance
The Battle of Khanwa was a turning point in medieval Indian history because it transformed Babur’s position from that of a conqueror who had won at Panipat into the founder of a durable Mughal political power in North India. It also marked an important stage in the transition towards artillery- and firearm-based warfare in the Indian subcontinent.
Animal husbandry is an important pillar of India’s agricultural economy, involving the breeding, feeding, healthcare and scientific management of livestock. It provides milk, meat, eggs, wool, hides, manure and draft power, thereby supporting rural livelihoods, food security and agricultural income. The sector contributes nearly 5.5% of India’s total GVA and more than 30% of the GVA of agriculture and allied sectors.
Dairy Sector
India is the world’s largest milk-producing country, and dairy farming provides regular income to millions of rural households. The White Revolution, particularly Operation Flood, expanded dairy cooperatives and transformed milk production and marketing. Major milk-producing states include Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Dairy cooperatives such as Amul support farmers through milk procurement, fair pricing, veterinary services and feed support.
Poultry Sector
The poultry sector is one of the fastest-growing segments of animal husbandry and includes layer farming for eggs and broiler farming for meat. Its relatively low initial investment and quick returns make it particularly attractive to small farmers. Major poultry-producing states include Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and Maharashtra. Modern poultry farming increasingly uses scientific breeding, vaccination, automated feeding and climate-controlled sheds.
Livestock Diversity
India has a very large livestock population comprising cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry. Cattle are mainly important for milk and draft power, buffaloes contribute significantly to milk production and meat exports, goats provide meat and milk, sheep are important for wool and mutton, while pigs and poultry are particularly significant for meat and eggs. Important indigenous breeds include Gir, Sahiwal and Murrah.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission
The Rashtriya Gokul Mission focuses on the conservation and genetic improvement of indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds. It promotes artificial insemination, scientific breeding and the development of Gokul Grams, helping improve productivity while preserving native breeds.
National Livestock Mission
The National Livestock Mission promotes entrepreneurship in sheep, goat, pig and poultry farming while supporting feed and fodder development and livestock infrastructure.
Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund
The DIDF supports modernization of dairy processing facilities, expansion of milk chilling and storage capacity, strengthening of cooperatives and greater value addition in dairy products.
Livestock Health and Disease Control
The Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme strengthens vaccination, veterinary infrastructure and diagnostic facilities, particularly against diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis. The National Animal Disease Control Programme specifically focuses on controlling and eliminating these diseases through mass vaccination and disease surveillance.
Infrastructure and Credit Support
The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund encourages investment in dairy and meat processing, cold chains and value-added products. The Kisan Credit Card provides affordable working capital to livestock farmers, including those engaged in dairy, poultry and fisheries.
Role of Women
Women are central to India’s animal husbandry economy, undertaking activities such as feeding, fodder collection, milking, animal care and dairy processing. Their participation in goat and poultry rearing and household-level dairy activities makes livestock an important source of rural income and livelihood security.
Challenges
The sector faces challenges related to low breed productivity, fodder shortages, inadequate veterinary infrastructure, livestock diseases, limited access to credit and insurance, and slow adoption of modern technology. Improving artificial insemination, fodder availability, veterinary services, vaccination, digital livestock management and financial access is therefore essential.
Way Forward
The future of animal husbandry depends on genetic improvement, fodder and feed security, stronger veterinary services, disease surveillance, modern infrastructure and wider technology adoption. Greater investment in milk chilling, cold chains, meat processing, livestock insurance, RFID-based tracking, tele-veterinary services and farmer-producer organisations can improve productivity, reduce losses and strengthen farmers’ incomes.
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) are district-level Farm Science Centres established in 1974 under ICAR to bridge the gap between agricultural research and farmers. They test and demonstrate region-specific technologies and provide training, advisory services and practical demonstrations in crop production, horticulture, livestock, fisheries and agroforestry.
Key Features
KVKs use On-Farm Testing (OFT) and Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs) to assess and showcase new agricultural technologies under local conditions. They provide soil and water testing, seed production, farm mechanisation guidance and climate-resilient farming advice. They also promote organic farming, Integrated Pest Management, natural-resource conservation and agricultural diversification.
Objectives
The major objectives are technology assessment and demonstration, skill development, technology transfer, farmer training, knowledge dissemination and promotion of sustainable agriculture. KVKs also encourage allied activities such as dairy, fisheries, horticulture and agroforestry to diversify and increase rural incomes.
Importance
KVKs act as a crucial research–extension–farmer link, ensuring that innovations developed by agricultural universities and research institutions reach farmers. Their locally adapted training and demonstrations help improve productivity, climate resilience, resource efficiency and farm incomes, while promoting food security and rural entrepreneurship.
Challenges
KVKs face limited funding, inadequate infrastructure and equipment, shortage of skilled personnel, weak research–extension linkages and limited outreach among small and marginal farmers. Gaps in coordination, monitoring and digital connectivity, particularly in remote areas, further restrict their effectiveness.
Way Forward
Strengthening KVKs requires better funding and infrastructure, specialised training in digital and precision agriculture, stronger research–extension linkages, wider digital outreach and improved monitoring of outcomes. This can make KVKs more effective as grassroots centres for technology adoption and sustainable agricultural transformation.
