Shifting cultivation, also known as slash-and-burn or swidden farming, is an indigenous agricultural system in which farmers clear and burn small forest patches, cultivate them for a few years, and then leave the land fallow for natural regeneration. The nutrient-rich ash temporarily improves soil fertility, after which cultivation shifts to another plot.
Process
The practice begins with clearing and burning vegetation to release nutrients into the soil. Farmers then cultivate cereals, pulses, tubers and vegetables for a limited period. As soil fertility and productivity decline, the plot is abandoned and left fallow, allowing natural vegetation to restore soil fertility. The cycle is then repeated.
Key Characteristics
Shifting cultivation is characterised by small-scale forest clearing, controlled burning, mixed cropping and long fallow periods. It relies heavily on traditional ecological knowledge, community cooperation and natural regeneration, while supporting local food security and self-sufficiency.
Major Types
Different forms of shifting cultivation have developed across regions. Jhum is widely practised in Northeast India, while Milpa is associated with Mesoamerica. Taungya combines crop cultivation with tree plantations, whereas Ladang is found in Southeast Asia. Other regional forms include Roca, Conuco, Ray, Kumara and Chena cultivation.
Significance
Shifting cultivation supports indigenous livelihoods, food security and cultural traditions. Its rotational nature can allow soil recovery and biodiversity conservation when adequate fallow periods are maintained. It also preserves traditional ecological knowledge and promotes community-based resource management.
Challenges
The sustainability of shifting cultivation depends largely on the length of the fallow period. Shortened fallow cycles can lead to soil erosion, nutrient depletion, declining fertility and deforestation. Increasing population pressure, unpredictable rainfall, droughts, pests and climate change can further reduce its productivity.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Shifting cultivation can maintain biodiversity, provide food security, enrich soil through controlled burning and sustain indigenous cultural practices. However, when fallow periods become too short, it may contribute to deforestation, soil degradation and fertility loss. It is also labour-intensive and vulnerable to climatic and market fluctuations.
Shifting Cultivation in India
In India, shifting cultivation is particularly associated with the Northeastern states, including Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. It is also practised in parts of Central India, the Western Ghats, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Eastern Himalayas. In Northeast India, it is commonly known as Jhum cultivation.
