Vansda National Park

Vansda National Park is located in Navsari district of southern Gujarat, near the Gujarat–Maharashtra border. Covering 23.99 sq. km, it is one of Gujarat’s smallest national parks and represents the northernmost extension of the Western Ghats ecosystem.

Historical Background

The forests were historically protected by the princely State of Vansda, where commercial tree felling was discouraged. Tree felling had largely been prohibited since 1952, and the area was declared a National Park in 1979, helping preserve its old-growth tropical moist deciduous forests.

Geography and Ecosystem

The park lies in the Dang forest region and forms part of the northern and western limits of the Sahyadri/Western Ghats. The Ambika River flows through the park, while its landscape consists of hills, valleys, perennial streams and dense forests. With nearly 2,000 mm annual rainfall, the region supports lush vegetation and rich biodiversity.

Flora

The vegetation is dominated by Teak (Tectona grandis) and Bamboo, along with species such as Mahuda, Kusum, Khair, Sadad, Sisam, Timru, Behada, Asan and Amla. More than 440 species of flowering plants have been recorded, while orchids, climbers, medicinal plants and giant creepers add to the ecological diversity.

Fauna

Leopard is the apex predator of the park. Other important mammals include Dhole, Sloth Bear, Four-horned Antelope, Barking Deer, Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Striped Hyena, Pangolin and Indian Giant Squirrel. Reptiles include the Indian Rock Python, King Cobra, Russell’s Viper and Krait. The park also supports over 150 bird species, including the Malabar Trogon, Grey Hornbill, Paradise Flycatcher and Racket-tailed Drongo.

Ecological Significance

Vansda is one of the few remaining dense natural forest patches in Gujarat and plays an important role in conserving the state’s moist deciduous ecosystem. It acts as a watershed for the Ambika River, maintains ecological connectivity with the Dang forests, and provides habitat for numerous rare mammals, reptiles, orchids and birds. It also supports biodiversity research and eco-tourism.
