About Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba is situated in Central Africa along the international border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was formed on the Zambezi River, approximately halfway between the river’s source and its mouth, and lies about 1,300 kilometres upstream from the Indian Ocean.

It is recognized as the world’s largest artificial lake and reservoir by volume and the fourth largest artificial lake by surface area, making it one of the most significant man-made water bodies in the world.

The lake extends for more than 220 kilometres in length and reaches a maximum width of around 40 kilometres, covering an area of approximately 5,200 square kilometres.

Formation and the Kariba Dam

Lake Kariba was created between 1958 and 1963 following the construction of the Kariba Dam across the Kariba Gorge on the Zambezi River. The dam flooded the gorge and gave rise to the massive reservoir that exists today.

The Kariba Dam is an engineering marvel consisting of a double-arch concrete wall. The structure stands about 128 metres high and measures 617 metres in length along its horizontal arch.

Economic Importance

The missile has an operational range of 700–1,200 kilometres, enabling it to strike strategic targets within the neighbourhood. It is powered by a solid-propellant booster technology derived from ISRO’s Satellite Launch Vehicle-3 (SLV-3) programme, reflecting the synergy between India’s civilian and defence space technologies.

Operational Features

The Agni-1 is a road-mobile and rail-mobile missile system, designed for rapid deployment and enhanced survivability. It can be launched from Transporter Erector Launchers (TELs) as well as rail-based platforms, allowing flexibility in operational scenarios.

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a vision disorder in which nearby objects appear clear, while distant objects look blurred. It is one of the most common refractive errors affecting people across all age groups.

The condition generally begins during childhood or adolescence and may worsen as the individual grows. In most cases, it stabilizes during adulthood, although some people may experience improvement later in life.

How Does Myopia Occur?

Under normal circumstances, light entering the eye passes through the cornea and is focused by the lens directly onto the retina, enabling clear vision.

In individuals with myopia, however, the eyeball is usually longer than normal from front to back, or the cornea is excessively curved. As a result, incoming light rays are focused in front of the retina rather than on it, causing distant objects to appear blurry.

The greater the elongation of the eyeball, the more severe the degree of nearsightedness.

Causes of Myopia

The exact cause of myopia is not fully understood, but experts believe that it results from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Children with a family history of myopia are more likely to develop the condition. Environmental factors such as prolonged screen time, excessive near work, and reduced exposure to outdoor activities and natural sunlight are also considered significant contributors to the rising prevalence of myopia globally.

Symptoms of Myopia

People suffering from myopia commonly experience blurred distance vision, making it difficult to read road signs, classroom boards, or distant objects. About the Four Labour Codes

India consolidated 29 central labour laws into four comprehensive Labour Codes to create a simpler and more unified legal framework.

The Code on Wages, 2019 seeks to ensure universal wage protection by extending the provisions relating to minimum wages and timely payment of wages to all employees across sectors.

The Industrial Relations Code, 2020 regulates trade unions, industrial disputes, layoffs, retrenchment, and introduces the concept of Fixed-Term Employment (FTE).

The Code on Social Security, 2020 aims to expand social security coverage to organised, unorganised, gig, and platform workers.

The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSHWC) Code, 2020 consolidates laws relating to workplace safety, health, welfare measures, and working conditions.

These reforms have been projected as an effort to balance economic efficiency with labour welfare.

Key Promises of the Labour Codes

One of the major objectives of the labour reforms is the simplification of labour laws. By replacing 29 fragmented legislations with four comprehensive codes, the government aims to reduce legal complexity and compliance burdens for businesses.

Ambiguity in Wage Determination

Another concern relates to the absence of a clear distinction between the concepts of floor wage and minimum wage. The framework also lacks transparent criteria and adequate consultation mechanisms with States for wage fixation, potentially leading to inconsistencies and disputes.

Unlike traditional full-day employment, workers paid on an hourly basis may not find work for the remaining hours of the day. Although the Social Security Code recognises gig and platform workers, it continues to treat them largely as self-employed individuals. Improving water-use efficiency is another critical strategy. The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), particularly its "Per Drop More Crop" component, promotes the adoption of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.

These modern irrigation techniques deliver water directly to plant roots, significantly reducing wastage and lowering the overall water footprint of agriculture. Expanding micro-irrigation coverage can help conserve groundwater resources and maintain agricultural productivity even during periods of deficient rainfall.

Strengthening Decentralised Water Governance

India's traditional water management systems provide valuable lessons for climate adaptation. The historical success of the Nizam-era tank system in present-day Telangana demonstrated how decentralised water bodies could cushion communities against droughts and famines.

Modern initiatives such as Mission Kakatiya in Telangana and the Mission Amrit Sarovar programme seek to revive ponds, tanks, and other traditional water structures. The restoration and maintenance of these local water bodies enhance groundwater recharge, provide irrigation support, and strengthen community resilience during climate shocks.

Treating El Niño as an Economic and Developmental Challenge

El Niño should not be viewed merely as a meteorological phenomenon but as a broader economic and developmental risk. Its impacts extend beyond agriculture to inflation, employment, and overall economic growth.

Therefore, India must build strong institutional safeguards, including crop insurance schemes, early-warning systems, and heat-resilient agricultural planning. Timely dissemination of weather forecasts and advisory services can enable farmers, particularly smallholders, to make informed decisions and reduce potential losses.

Implementing Statutory Heat Action Plans

Rising temperatures associated with El Niño events pose serious risks to workers, especially those engaged in outdoor occupations such as construction, agriculture, and street vending. Consequently, Heat Action Plans (HAPs) should be legally institutionalised and effectively implemented at the local level.

These plans should mandate flexible working hours, ensure the availability of shaded worksites and drinking water facilities, and explore mechanisms such as wage-loss compensation or climate insurance for workers affected by extreme heat conditions. Such measures are crucial for protecting vulnerable populations and maintaining economic productivity.

Urban Greening and Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Rapid urbanisation has intensified the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, making cities significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas. To address this challenge, cities must adopt cool roof policies, increase tree cover, and restore urban water bodies.

The development of blue-green infrastructure, including wetlands, parks, lakes, and urban forests, can reduce ambient temperatures, improve groundwater recharge, and enhance overall environmental sustainability. These measures are vital for making Indian cities more resilient to climate extremes.

Adopting Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA)

An integrated Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) approach should become a central component of India's climate strategy. Restoring natural ecosystems such as wetlands, forests, and river systems helps regulate local climates, conserve biodiversity, and improve water availability.

Expanding tree canopies and protecting green spaces can mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, while healthy ecosystems contribute to long-term climate resilience and sustainable development.

Conclusion

El Niño demonstrates how climate variability can directly affect agriculture, livelihoods, inflation, and economic growth in India. The experience of historical famines and recent climate disruptions highlights the importance of moving from a reactive relief-based approach to a proactive adaptation strategy.
