Basis of the Contract
The RAINMUMBAI contract is based on rainfall data from Mumbai. The rainfall observations used for settlement are sourced from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) through its surface rainfall monitoring systems and Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) located at Santacruz and Colaba.
The contract measures the deviation of actual rainfall from Mumbai’s Long Period Average (LPA) during the monsoon season. Since rainfall is the underlying variable, the contract is cash-settled, eliminating the need for physical delivery.
Trading Features
Trading under RAINMUMBAI is available only during the four monsoon months of June, July, August, and September, reflecting Mumbai's seasonal rainfall pattern.
The contract is traded in lots with a base value of ₹50 per millimetre of rainfall, enabling participants to choose positions according to their risk exposure. Trading takes place on weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
