About Agni-1 Missile
The Agni-1 is a single-stage, solid-fuel, nuclear-capable ballistic missile developed indigenously by India. It forms an important component of India's credible minimum deterrence and nuclear triad strategy.
Although officially classified as a Short-Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM), the missile can attain a range of up to 1,200 km with lighter payloads, bringing it close to the category of a Medium-Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM).
The missile has an operational range of 700–1,200 kilometres, enabling it to strike strategic targets within the neighbourhood. It is powered by a solid-propellant booster technology derived from ISRO’s Satellite Launch Vehicle-3 (SLV-3) programme, reflecting the synergy between India’s civilian and defence space technologies.
Operational Features
The Agni-1 is a road-mobile and rail-mobile missile system, designed for rapid deployment and enhanced survivability. It can be launched from Transporter Erector Launchers (TELs) as well as rail-based platforms, allowing flexibility in operational scenarios.
The missile was formally inducted into service in 2007 under the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), the specialised tri-service command responsible for managing India's nuclear arsenal.
Its capability to carry nuclear warheads makes it a key pillar of India's policy of credible minimum deterrence and No First Use (NFU) doctrine.
Agni Missile Series
The Agni series of ballistic missiles represents the backbone of India's strategic missile programme. The series presently includes:
Agni-I (700–1,200 km)
Agni-II (2,000 km)
Agni-III (3,000–3,500 km)
Agni-IV (4,000 km)
Agni-V (over 5,000 km)
Agni Prime (Agni-P), a new-generation canisterised missile with advanced technologies
Among these, Agni-V is the most advanced operational missile, significantly enhancing India's long-range strategic deterrence capabilities.
Origin and Development
The Agni-I missile originated from the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) launched in 1983 under the leadership of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
The IGMDP aimed to achieve self-reliance in missile technology and led to the development of several important missile systems, including:
Agni (ballistic missiles)
Prithvi (surface-to-surface missiles)
Akash (surface-to-air missiles)
Trishul (short-range SAM)
Nag (anti-tank guided missiles)
