A Cutting-edge technology in agriculture refers to technological devices, techniques or achievements that employ the most current and high-level IT developments , for example- robots and GPS technology.
In present times agriculture is facing issues like reduction in yield, pest attacks, disguised unemployment, low investments among others. To address these issues cutting-edge technologies are seen as the potential solution. These can revolutionize agricultural industry in the following manner-
1. Increasing agricultural output
- Helping farmers with decisions on when and how much to irrigate, fertilize and apply pesticides to their crops ex: soil health monitoring system.
- Real time weather forecasting ex: Accuweather app.
- Mapping and surveying the field and keep a timely check on the plantation ex : drones technology.
- Smart greenhouses: completely automated, run by algorithms that ensure optimal conditions for plant growth by adjusting inputs like roof ventilation, artificial lighting and heating.
2. Creating jobs
- Agronomists: often called as ‘crop doctors’ who study about crop production, seed and soil management.
- Drone technologists : provide farmers with ways to reduce crop damage and increase yield.
- Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs): they can reach out to farmers and encourage them to become tech-enabled.
- Web/ Software developers: to design online apps or e-commerce stores ex: software technology by cropin company.
- Digital marketers to create a solid social media presence online.
- Customer service representatives and support staff to handle queries and operations respectively.
- Sales representative having fundamental understanding of how technology adds value to the farmer.
3. Encouraging the sale of farm products
- Online marketing platforms selling products like seeds, fertilisers and pesticides
case study: online platform DeHaat links farmers to institutional buyers, such as Coke and Zomato; and it offers advice on different crops.
- ‘Uberization of Agriculture’: increasing profitability and alleviating uncertainty among smallholder growers.ex- Uberization project carried out by FarmERP for formalizing market linkages.
- Advertisements on online platforms like youtube or instagram to attract user’s focus ex: licious promoting sea food and meat products.
