How Many Number of Attempts in the UPSC Exam:
Every eligible candidate appearing at the examination is permitted six (6) Attempts for UPSC Civil Services Examination. However, age relaxation in the number of attempts will apply to the eligible SC/ST/OBC and PwBD category candidates. As per the age relaxation allowed by UPSC, the Number of Attempts for UPSC such candidates can give is as follows:

Note:
1) The abbreviations denote the categories of candidates attempting the UPSC Examination. GL, EWS, SC, ST, OBC and PwBD stand for General, Economically Weaker Sections, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, respectively.

3) a single paper on the CSE Preliminary Examination as an attempt
4) at the Civil Services Examination.
5) Restrictions on applying for the examination:
(a) A candidate recommended and appointed to the (IAS)Indian Administrative Service or the (IFS)Indian Foreign Service based on the results of an earlier Examination and continues to be a member of that Service will not be eligible to appear at the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
(b) In case such a candidate is appointed to the IAS or IFS after the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination is over and the candidate continues to be a member of that Service, the candidate shall not be eligible to appear in the Civil Services (Main) Examination notwithstanding having qualified in the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination. Suppose UPSC appoints such a candidate to the IAS or IFS after the Civil Services (Main) Examination commences. Still, before the Commission declares the result, they continue to be a member of that Service. In that case, UPSC shall not consider the candidate for appointment to any Service/Post based on the result of the CSE.
(c) A candidate appointed to the Indian Police Service based on the results of an earlier Examination and continues to be a member of that Service shall not be eligible to opt for the Indian Police Service based on the result of the CSE.
