Every summer, more than 125 quintals of Bhagalpur's famous Zardalu mangoes are carefully selected and sent to the President of India, the Prime Minister, and other constitutional dignitaries. This long-standing tradition has made the mango a symbol of Bihar's agricultural heritage and showcases the state's rich horticultural legacy.
About Zardalu Mango
Zardalu Mango, also known as Jardalu, is a premium and distinctive variety of mango grown primarily in Bhagalpur district of Bihar.
It is renowned for its light golden-yellow colour, pleasant aroma, sweet flavour, and soft, fibre-free pulp, making it one of India's finest table mangoes.
The history of this mango dates back to the early nineteenth century, when Maharaja Rahmat Ali Khan Bahadur of Haveli Kharagpur introduced its cultivation in the Bhagalpur region.
The first sapling, planted between 1810 and 1820 in Tagepur village, still survives today, reflecting the rich historical legacy of this unique mango variety.
Characteristics
The Zardalu mango is available from mid-April to the end of June, making it one of the earliest premium mango varieties of the summer season. The fruits generally weigh between 150 and 300 grams and possess a rich, creamy texture with tender, juicy, non-fibrous pulp.
As the fruit ripens, its skin changes to a golden-yellow colour with a reddish tinge near the top. Its distinctive fragrance and naturally sweet taste make it highly valued in both domestic and premium markets.

Zardalu mangoes are rich in dietary fibre, natural enzymes, vitamins, and antioxidants, making them beneficial for the digestive system and overall health. Their high nutritional value, combined with exceptional taste and aroma, contributes to their growing popularity.
Geographical Indication (GI) Tag
The Jardalu Mango was awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag in 2018. The GI recognition protects its unique identity, promotes the traditional cultivation practices of Bhagalpur, enhances market value, and supports the livelihoods of local mango growers.
Significance
Zardalu mango is regarded as one of the flagship horticultural products of Bihar. Its annual dispatch to the country's highest constitutional authorities reflects its cultural importance and reinforces Bhagalpur's reputation as a major centre of premium mango cultivation. The GI tag has also strengthened its branding in national and international markets, contributing to the promotion of India's indigenous fruit varieties.
