The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) collaboration recently published its first scientific results, including highly precise measurements of how neutrinos produced by nuclear reactors change their flavour (oscillate) while travelling.
About JUNO
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large underground neutrino research facility located near Kaiping in Guangdong Province, China.
It is one of the world's most advanced experiments dedicated to studying neutrinos and is regarded as a next-generation neutrino observatory.
JUNO is the outcome of an international scientific collaboration involving 74 research institutions from Asia, Europe, and the Americas, with nearly 700 scientists participating in the project.
The observatory is led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) through its Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP).
It is China's second major neutrino experiment, following the successful Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment.
Location and Infrastructure
JUNO has been strategically established approximately 53 kilometres from the Taishan and Yangjiang Nuclear Power Plants. These reactors continuously produce a large number of electron antineutrinos, making them ideal sources for precision neutrino studies.
The observatory is constructed 700 metres beneath the Earth's surface, which shields the detector from cosmic radiation and other background noise.
The underground experimental hall measures nearly 80 metres in height and 50 metres in diameter, providing space for one of the world's most sophisticated neutrino detectors.
Its central component is a 35-metre-radius spherical detector filled with nearly 20,000 tonnes of ultra-pure liquid scintillator.
This makes JUNO the largest and highest-precision liquid scintillator detector ever built. The observatory has been designed for an operational lifespan of nearly 30 years, enabling continuous long-term scientific research.
Primary Scientific Objective
The principal objective of JUNO is to determine the Neutrino Mass Ordering (NMO), one of the most important unresolved questions in modern particle physics.
Scientists aim to achieve this by precisely measuring the oscillation pattern of electron antineutrinos emitted from nearby nuclear power reactors. By analysing how these neutrinos change from one flavour to another during their journey, researchers hope to determine the correct sequence of neutrino masses, thereby improving our understanding of the Standard Model of Particle Physics.
Technology Used
JUNO employs an extremely sensitive liquid scintillator detector capable of detecting the faint flashes of light produced when neutrinos interact with atoms inside the detector.
The enormous detector volume, combined with thousands of highly sensitive photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), enables the experiment to measure neutrino energies with unprecedented precision. The underground location further enhances accuracy by minimizing interference from cosmic rays.

JUNO is regarded as one of the three next-generation neutrino observatories leading global research in neutrino physics. What are Neutrinos?
Neutrinos are extremely small elementary particles belonging to the lepton family in the Standard Model of Particle Physics.
They are commonly known as "Ghost Particles" because they interact only very weakly with matter, allowing them to pass through almost any object without being detected.
Neutrinos possess no electric charge and have an extremely small mass, less than one millionth of the mass of an electron.
They travel at speeds very close to the speed of light, making them among the fastest known particles in nature.
Although Wolfgang Pauli first predicted the existence of neutrinos in 1930, they were experimentally discovered only in 1956, highlighting the extraordinary difficulty involved in detecting them.
Interaction with Fundamental Forces
Among the four fundamental forces of nature, neutrinos interact only through the Weak Nuclear Force and Gravity. They do not experience the Electromagnetic Force because they carry no electric charge, nor do they participate in the Strong Nuclear Force that binds atomic nuclei.
This extremely weak interaction explains why nearly 100 trillion neutrinos pass through the human body every second without causing any noticeable effect.
Sources of Neutrinos
Neutrinos are produced in a wide variety of natural and artificial processes. They originate from nuclear reactions inside the Sun, supernova explosions, radioactive decay, cosmic rays, nuclear reactors, and various other high-energy astrophysical events.
They are generally created when heavy particles decay into lighter particles, making them among the most abundant particles in the Universe.

Faunal Diversity
Udanti–Sitanadi Tiger Reserve supports a rich diversity of wildlife and is particularly known for conserving the endangered Wild Water Buffalo, one of India's most threatened large mammals. Besides the Royal Bengal Tiger, the reserve is also home to Leopards, Indian Wolves, Sloth Bears, Mouse Deer, Wild Dogs (Dholes), Spotted Deer, Sambar, and several species of birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

About NASM–MR
The Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM–MR) is an indigenously developed subsonic, sea-skimming anti-ship missile being designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Navy. It is intended to destroy small- and medium-sized enemy warships, including frigates, corvettes, and destroyers, thereby enhancing India's maritime strike capability.
The missile is being developed in multiple variants, including ship-launched, air-launched, and submarine-launched versions.
It complements the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Short Range (NASM–SR), creating a layered anti-ship strike capability that enables the Navy to engage hostile vessels at both close and medium ranges.
Key Features
The missile is powered by an indigenously developed Small Gas Turbine Jet Engine (SGTJE), providing efficient propulsion and sustained flight performance. It follows a sea-skimming flight profile, flying just above the sea surface to evade enemy radar detection and improve survivability against naval air defence systems.
NASM–MR has an operational range of up to 350 km, enabling the Indian Navy to engage hostile ships from a safe stand-off distance. It carries a warhead weighing over 200 kg, capable of inflicting significant damage on enemy surface combatants.
The missile is equipped with an advanced dual-mode guidance system, integrating an Active Radar Seeker with an Imaging Infrared (IIR) Seeker. This combination enhances target acquisition, tracking accuracy, and resistance to electronic countermeasures, while ensuring all-weather operational capability.
Strategic Significance

About the BMD System
India's Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Programme, developed by DRDO, is designed to detect, track, and destroy incoming ballistic missiles before they reach their targets. The system provides multi-layered protection by intercepting enemy missiles both inside the Earth's atmosphere (Endo-atmospheric interception) and outside the atmosphere (Exo-atmospheric interception).
The recent trials were conducted under Phase II of the BMD programme, focusing on the advanced AD-series interceptors, which are capable of intercepting Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) and even Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) of the 5,000-km class.
AD-1 Interceptor
The AD-1 interceptor is an endo-atmospheric interceptor designed to destroy incoming ballistic missiles during the terminal phase of their flight within the Earth's atmosphere. It is powered by a two-stage solid-propellant rocket motor and employs advanced navigation, guidance, and control algorithms to intercept both high-speed ballistic missiles and slower-moving aerial targets.
AD-2 Interceptor
The AD-2 interceptor is an exo-atmospheric interceptor designed to engage ballistic missiles during their mid-course phase outside the Earth's atmosphere. By destroying hostile missiles in space before re-entry, it provides an additional protective layer and significantly improves the probability of successful interception.
Both AD-1 and AD-2 are capable of travelling at hypersonic speeds of Mach 6–7, enabling them to intercept highly manoeuvrable and fast-moving ballistic missile threats.

The Government of India has introduced major reforms to increase Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) participation in Government Securities (G-Secs). These reforms aim to deepen India's bond market, attract stable long-term foreign capital, diversify the investor base, and strengthen India's position as an important destination for global investments.
Objective of the Reforms
The reforms are intended to create a deeper, more liquid, and globally integrated debt market by encouraging greater participation of foreign investors in Government Securities. A broader investor base is expected to improve market efficiency, reduce dependence on domestic investors, and lower the government's borrowing costs while supporting long-term economic growth.
Tax Benefits for Foreign Investors
To make Indian Government Securities more attractive, the Government has provided significant tax exemptions for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). From 1 April 2026, interest income as well as capital gains arising from the sale, transfer, exchange, or redemption of Government Securities (G-Secs) are exempt from taxation. This measure improves post-tax returns and enhances India's competitiveness compared to other emerging bond markets.
Expansion of the Fully Accessible Route (FAR)
The Fully Accessible Route (FAR) has been expanded to include newly issued 15-year, 30-year, and 40-year Government Securities, along with Sovereign Green Bonds (SGrBs) of eligible maturities.
Under FAR, foreign investors can invest in specified Government Securities without being subject to investment limits or restrictions applicable under the General Route.
This expansion is expected to attract long-term institutional investors, particularly those seeking stable returns from long-duration sovereign debt.
Liberalisation under the General Route
The Government has further liberalised the General Route by removing the short-term investment limit, concentration limit, and security-wise investment limit for foreign investors. However, the overall investment ceilings remain unchanged, with foreign investment capped at 6% of outstanding Central Government Securities (CGSs) and 2% of outstanding State Government Securities (SGSs).

To simplify the investment framework, the Government has merged the existing General and Long-Term investment categories into a single investment limit for both Central and State Government Securities. This rationalisation reduces procedural complexity and creates a more transparent and efficient regulatory environment for foreign investors.
Focus on Long-Term Institutional Investors
The reforms are specifically designed to attract long-term investors such as pension funds, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds, and other institutional investors. These investors generally provide stable and predictable capital, reducing volatility in financial markets and strengthening the resilience of India's debt market.

Greater foreign participation is expected to improve market liquidity, strengthen price discovery, and facilitate the development of a more efficient government bond yield curve, which serves as a benchmark for pricing other financial instruments.
A well-developed bond market also enhances the transmission of monetary policy by enabling changes in policy rates to be reflected more effectively across the financial system.
The reforms are also expected to reduce the Government's borrowing costs, provide additional resources for infrastructure development, manufacturing, urban development, and green transition projects, while supporting the inclusion of Indian Government Securities in major global bond indices. Tetanus, a disease once considered largely under control through widespread vaccination, is witnessing a resurgence in the United States. Health experts attribute this trend primarily to declining vaccination coverage, especially among adults who have not received their recommended booster doses.
What is Tetanus?
Tetanus, commonly known as Lockjaw, is a serious bacterial disease that attacks the nervous system, causing severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms.
The disease is caused by a powerful neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani.
Unlike many infectious diseases, tetanus does not spread from person to person. Infection occurs when bacterial spores enter the body through cuts, puncture wounds, burns, animal bites, or contaminated injuries, where they multiply under low-oxygen conditions and release toxins.
Causative Organism
The disease is caused by Clostridium tetani, a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacterium. The spores are highly resistant and are commonly found in soil, dust, animal manure, and occasionally in the human intestine.
Because these spores can survive in the environment for many years, tetanus remains a persistent public health concern.
The disease occurs more frequently in warm climates and during warmer months, when environmental conditions favour bacterial survival.
How Does Tetanus Affect the Body?
After entering the body through an open wound, the bacteria produce a toxin known as Tetanospasmin, one of the most potent toxins known.
This toxin travels through the nervous system and blocks the release of inhibitory neurotransmitters, particularly GABA and Glycine, resulting in continuous muscle contractions, rigidity, and painful spasms.
The incubation period generally ranges from 3 to 21 days, with an average of 8 days. Shorter incubation periods are often associated with more severe disease.
Symptoms
The earliest and most characteristic symptom of tetanus is Lockjaw (Trismus), in which the jaw muscles become stiff, making it difficult or impossible to open the mouth.
As the disease progresses, patients experience difficulty swallowing, painful muscle stiffness, and sudden involuntary muscle spasms, particularly in the abdomen and back. Other symptoms include headache, fever, profuse sweating, seizures, and fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate due to autonomic nervous system involvement.
Complications
Severe tetanus can result in life-threatening complications. Patients may develop Laryngospasm, in which the vocal cords suddenly tighten, causing airway obstruction and breathing difficulty. Repeated muscle spasms can lead to bone fractures, while prolonged immobility increases the risk of Pulmonary Embolism.
Aspiration of saliva or vomit may cause Aspiration Pneumonia, and respiratory muscle involvement can result in Respiratory Failure, which is the leading cause of death in severe tetanus cases.
Treatment
There is no specific cure for tetanus once the toxin has attached to the nervous system. Treatment focuses on neutralising circulating toxin, controlling muscle spasms, managing complications, and providing intensive supportive care, including mechanical ventilation if required.
Importantly, recovery from tetanus does not provide natural immunity, meaning a person can become infected again if not vaccinated.
Prevention
Tetanus is a completely vaccine-preventable disease. Protection is provided through Tetanus Toxoid-containing vaccines, including DTP, DTaP, Td, and Tdap vaccines.
Routine childhood immunisation consists of five primary doses, followed by booster doses during adolescence and every 10 years throughout adulthood to maintain immunity.
Pregnant women are advised to receive the Tdap vaccine during pregnancy to protect both themselves and their newborns against neonatal tetanus.
Public Health Significance
The widespread use of tetanus vaccination has drastically reduced global mortality. However, the disease remains a concern in areas with low immunisation coverage, poor wound care, and unsafe childbirth practices. Maintaining high vaccination coverage and timely booster doses is essential because tetanus spores remain widespread in the environment and cannot be eradicated.
