Stenothoe lowryi

For the first time in India, a rare marine amphipod species named Stenothoe lowryi has been discovered in Indian waters. The species was identified by researchers from Berhampur University during a marine survey at Aryjapalli Beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

Previously, this species was known only from the coastal waters of Malaysia, making its discovery in India significant for marine biodiversity studies.

About Stenothoe lowryi

Stenothoe lowryi is a rare marine amphipod belonging to the family Stenothoidae under the order Amphipoda. It is a small, shrimp-like crustacean with a body size of approximately 5.5 mm.

The species is characterized by:

  • Prominent large claws (gnathopods), which help in gripping surfaces and capturing food

  • Adaptation to rocky intertidal habitats

  • Unique antennal structures and pereopod (walking leg) configurations, which distinguish it from related species

These physical features support its scavenging lifestyle, allowing it to feed on organic matter in its environment.

Although detailed ecological studies are still limited, it is believed that the species plays an important role in the marine food web, contributing to nutrient recycling and ecosystem balance.

What are Amphipods?

Amphipods are small crustaceans that belong to the order Amphipoda. They are widely distributed and can be found in:

  • Oceans and seas

  • Freshwater bodies such as lakes and rivers

  • Sand beaches, caves, and moist tropical habitats

They are closely related to other crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters, and shrimp.

Key Features of Amphipods

  • The term “amphipoda” means “different-footed”, referring to their varied types of legs

  • They have an elongated body structure with:

    • A distinct head

    • A thorax (pereon) with 7 segments

    • An abdomen (pleon) with 6 segments

  • Their size ranges from very tiny (0.1 cm) to as large as 34 cm in some species

  • There are over 7,000 known species, most belonging to the group Gammaridea

Feeding Habits

Most amphipods feed on:

  • Dead plant and animal matter

  • Organic debris

Some species are scavengers, playing a crucial role in breaking down organic material and maintaining ecological balance.

Significance of the Discovery

The discovery of Stenothoe lowryi in India highlights:

  • Expansion of known species distribution

  • Richness of India’s marine biodiversity

  • Importance of coastal and intertidal ecosystem studies

It also emphasizes the need for continued marine research and conservation efforts, especially in lesser-explored coastal regions.
