Recently, officials of the Karnataka Forest Department captured a sloth bear that had been roaming in villages around Shivamogga Airport.

About Sloth Bear

The Sloth Bear is one of the eight species of bears found in the world. It is native to the Indian subcontinent and is mainly found in forested regions of South Asia.

The species is scientifically adapted for feeding on insects and is classified as myrmecophagous, meaning it primarily feeds on ants and termites.

Key Features

  • Sloth bears possess long, shaggy black or dark-brown fur.

  • They have long curved claws, which are among the longest of all bear species and help in digging termite mounds.

  • Their specially adapted long lower lip and palate enable them to suck insects efficiently. Due to this feature, they are also called “labiated bears.”

  • Unlike many other bear species, sloth bears are mostly nocturnal, searching for food during the night and resting during the day.

Sloth bears are highly specialized insect-eating bears and play an important ecological role in controlling insect populations.

Habitat and Distribution

Sloth bears inhabit:

  • Dry forests

  • Moist deciduous forests

  • Tall grasslands with rocky shelters and shrubs

They are mainly distributed across:

  • India

  • Nepal

  • Sri Lanka

  • Possibly Bhutan

Important Sanctuaries in India

India has dedicated protected areas for the conservation of sloth bears, including:

  • Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

  • Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Conservation Status

The Sloth Bear is facing threats from habitat loss, human-animal conflict, and poaching. Therefore, it has received legal and international protection.

  • IUCN Red List: Vulnerable

  • CITES: Appendix I

  • Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: Schedule I

Schedule I status under the Wildlife Protection Act provides the highest level of legal protection to sloth bears in India.

Significance

Sloth bears are an important part of forest ecosystems. By feeding on termites and insects, they help maintain ecological balance. Their conservation is also important for preserving biodiversity in South Asian forests
