The Ministry of Education has released the 9th edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024. This ranking system, introduced in 2015, aims to evaluate and rank higher educational institutions across India based on a detailed set of criteria.

About NIRF

  • Launched: 2015
  • Objective: To provide a methodology for ranking Indian educational institutions.
  • Parameters: Institutions are ranked based on five primary parameters:
  • Teaching, Learning, and Resources: Focus on student-teacher ratios, faculty qualifications, and infrastructure.
  • Research and Professional Practices: Emphasis on publications, patents, and collaborations.
  • Graduation Outcomes: Based on student placements, higher studies, and graduation rates.
  • Outreach and Inclusivity: Accounts for diversity, inclusivity, and regional outreach.
  • Perception: Reflects the reputation of the institution among academic peers and the public.

New Additions for Ranking in 2024

  • Open Universities, State Public Universities, and Skill Universities have been included in this year’s rankings, marking an expansion in the types of institutions evaluated.

Key Results from NIRF 2024

  • IIT Madras continues to hold the top spot as the best educational institution in India for the sixth consecutive year (since 2019).
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore secured the second position, maintaining its reputation as one of the leading institutions for science and research.

Implementing Agencies

  • National Board of Accreditation (NBA), in collaboration with the INFLIBNET Centre based in Gandhinagar, is responsible for conducting the NIRF rankings.

The NIRF rankings are essential in providing students and policymakers with valuable insights into the quality and reputation of educational institutions across India.
