Recently, the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), along with the Chief Minister of Assam, launched Mission Senehjori – Assam Muga Silk USP to transform Assam’s traditional Muga silk industry into a globally recognized luxury textile ecosystem.
Mission Senehjori is a comprehensive cluster-based initiative designed to strengthen and modernize the entire Muga silk value chain in Assam.
The mission seeks to convert Assam's unique Golden Muga Silk, which possesses a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, into a globally competitive premium textile brand while preserving the region's traditional knowledge and cultural heritage.
To develop a globally competitive and high-value luxury textile ecosystem centred on Assam's Muga silk.
To strengthen the entire value chain, beginning from host-plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to reeling, weaving, branding, export promotion, digital traceability, and tourism.
To enhance the income and livelihood opportunities of silk farmers, weavers, and artisans across Assam.
To establish Assam Muga Silk as a premium international brand in the luxury textile market.
The mission involves an estimated investment of ₹396–411 crore over a period of three years.
The funding model reflects a collaborative effort involving the Central Government, the Government of Assam, technical institutions, and private-sector partners.
The mission adopts a cluster-based model, focusing on the major Muga silk-producing districts of Assam.
This approach aims to create integrated production ecosystems where cultivation, processing, weaving, and marketing activities are carried out in a coordinated manner, thereby improving efficiency and economies of scale.
The programme emphasizes strengthening the host-plant ecology, particularly the cultivation of Som (Persea bombycina) and Soalu (Litsea monopetala) trees, which are essential for Muga silkworm rearing.
It also proposes the establishment of modern reeling infrastructure, Common Facility Centres (CFCs), and the promotion of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to improve productivity, value addition, and market access.
Mission Senehjori seeks to build a unified global identity for Assam's Muga silk under the "Senehjori" brand.
The initiative includes GI authentication mechanisms, digital traceability systems, and export promotion measures to ensure authenticity and enhance international consumer confidence in Muga products.
The mission follows a "whole-of-government" approach, involving coordinated efforts among various Central Ministries, the Government of Assam, research institutions, and private enterprises.
Such convergence aims to ensure comprehensive support across production, infrastructure, marketing, tourism, and skill development.
Muga Silk is a unique variety of silk produced exclusively in Assam and is often referred to as the "Golden Silk of Assam" because of its natural golden-yellow colour and lustre.
It is renowned for its exceptional durability, strength, and the fact that its sheen improves with age and washing.
Muga silk is produced by the Antheraea assamensis silkworm, which is endemic to the Brahmaputra Valley region.
The silkworm primarily feeds on the leaves of Som and Soalu plants.
Assam Muga Silk received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007, recognizing its unique geographical origin and traditional production methods.
Muga silk occupies an important place in Assamese culture and traditions and is widely used in traditional garments such as Mekhela Chador and ceremonial attire.
The mission is expected to generate employment opportunities for thousands of farmers, weavers, and artisans while increasing rural incomes through value addition and export promotion.
By strengthening traditional sericulture practices and promoting indigenous knowledge systems, the initiative contributes to the preservation of Assam's rich cultural heritage.
The emphasis on host-plant conservation, community participation, and eco-friendly production practices aligns with broader goals of sustainable rural development.
The mission also aims to integrate silk tourism with Assam's cultural and ecological attractions, creating new avenues for economic growth.
