A bolide is a large, exceptionally bright meteor that explodes in the Earth's atmosphere, producing an intense flash of light and, in some cases, causing fragments to fall to the ground as meteorites.
The term is generally used for meteors that are much brighter and more energetic than ordinary shooting stars and often undergo an airburst (atmospheric explosion) during their descent.
Because of their explosive nature, bolides can generate sonic booms, shock waves, and bright fireballs visible over vast distances.
