Recently, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a climate observation station in the Himalayan region under the Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON).
About Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON)
The Bharat Climate Observation Network (BCON) is a national climate observation initiative conceptualized and implemented by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India.
The network aims to establish a long-term, high-precision climate monitoring system across the country by collecting reliable and continuous climate data. It will strengthen India's ability to understand climate variability, climate change, and their impacts on the environment and society.
Objectives of BCON
Develop Long-Term Climate Monitoring
The primary objective of BCON is to create a high-precision, long-term climate observation framework that continuously records important atmospheric and environmental parameters across different regions of India.
Support Climate Research
The network seeks to generate scientifically reliable climate datasets that help researchers understand long-term climate trends, improve knowledge of climate change, and support advanced scientific studies.
Strengthen Climate-Based Policy Making
BCON aims to provide evidence-based climate information to policymakers, enabling informed decisions related to climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, agriculture, water management, and environmental planning.
Functions of Bharat Climate Observation Network
Monitoring Meteorological and Climate Parameters
BCON will continuously monitor a wide range of meteorological and climate-related parameters. These include temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind, soil moisture, greenhouse gases, short-lived climate pollutants, and various aspects of atmospheric chemistry.
This comprehensive monitoring will help in understanding both natural climate variability and human-induced climate change.
Creation of a National Climate Database
The network will develop a robust national climate database by collecting high-quality observational data from different regions of the country.
This database will support the detection of long-term climate trends, facilitate climate change research, and strengthen India's capacity for climate assessment and evidence-based policymaking.
Significance of Bharat Climate Observation Network
Improves Climate Models
The highly accurate datasets generated by BCON will serve as an important source for validating and benchmarking climate models.
These observations will significantly improve the performance of Earth System Models (ESMs), including India's first Earth System Model (IITM-ESM).
Enhances Climate Change Projections
