Recently, the AUKUS alliance members announced plans to develop advanced underwater drone systems and further deepen their maritime cooperation, reflecting their growing strategic focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

About AUKUS

AUKUS is a trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, established in September 2021.

The partnership seeks to strengthen the defence capabilities of the three nations, accelerate technological integration, and expand their industrial capacities to maintain peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific.

AUKUS builds upon the long-standing bilateral defence relationships among the three countries and aims to enhance their collective ability to address emerging strategic challenges, particularly in the maritime domain.

Objectives of AUKUS

  • To enhance regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific amid increasing geopolitical competition.

  • To deepen defence and technological cooperation among Australia, the UK, and the US.

  • To strengthen military interoperability and promote the joint development of advanced defence technologies.

  • To expand the industrial and innovation capabilities of all three partners in critical strategic sectors.

The Two Pillars of AUKUS

Pillar I: Nuclear-Powered Submarine Programme

Under Pillar I, the United States and the United Kingdom are assisting Australia in acquiring its first fleet of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs).

The initiative involves technology transfer, training, and industrial collaboration to develop the SSN-AUKUS class submarines.

Importantly, the arrangement does not involve the transfer of nuclear weapons to Australia and remains consistent with Australia's obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The nuclear propulsion technology is expected to provide Australia with greater range, stealth, endurance, and operational capability in the Indo-Pacific.

Pillar II: Advanced Capability Cooperation

Pillar II focuses on collaboration in cutting-edge military technologies to ensure technological superiority and enhance collective defence preparedness.

The cooperation covers eight major areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) for autonomous systems and military decision-making.

  • Quantum Technologies for advanced computing, sensing, and secure communications.

  • Cyber Capabilities to strengthen resilience against cyber threats.

  • Undersea Warfare Technologies, including autonomous underwater vehicles and underwater drones.

  • Hypersonic Weapons development.

  • Counter-Hypersonic Systems to detect and neutralize hypersonic threats.

  • Electronic Warfare capabilities.

  • Innovation and Information Sharing mechanisms to accelerate technological advancement and defence integration.

Strategic Significance of AUKUS

Strengthening the Indo-Pacific Security Architecture

AUKUS seeks to reinforce the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific by enhancing the military capabilities of allied nations and ensuring a free, open, and rules-based maritime order.

Countering China's Growing Influence

Many analysts view AUKUS as part of broader efforts by Western allies to respond to China's expanding military and economic influence, particularly in the South China Sea and the wider Indo-Pacific.

Technological Leadership

The partnership emphasizes leadership in emerging technologies, which are increasingly becoming central to future warfare and national security.

Deepening Allied Integration

By integrating defence industries, research institutions, and military capabilities, AUKUS aims to create a highly interoperable security framework among its members.

Criticisms and Concerns

  • China has criticized AUKUS, arguing that it may intensify regional militarization and fuel an arms race in the Indo-Pacific.

  • Some countries have expressed concerns regarding the implications of sharing nuclear propulsion technology, even though the agreement does not involve nuclear weapons.

  • France strongly opposed the pact after Australia cancelled a major submarine contract with a French company following the announcement of AUKUS.
