The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has unveiled ANCHOR, the world’s most detailed 3D atlas of the human brainstem, marking a significant breakthrough in neuroscience, brain mapping, and medical research.
About ANCHOR
ANCHOR stands for Atlas of Neurochemical Characterization of the Human Brainstem with 3D Reconstruction. It is the world’s most comprehensive three-dimensional atlas of the human brainstem, providing highly detailed anatomical and neurochemical maps.
The atlas covers the prenatal stage, childhood, and adult human brains, enabling researchers to study brain development and structural changes across different stages of life.
The project has been developed by the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre (SGBC) at IIT Madras, which is one of India’s leading centres for advanced brain research.
Key Features
Comprehensive 3D Brain Mapping
ANCHOR contains more than 200 brainstem nuclei and fibre tracts, reconstructed from hundreds of serial brain sections, making it the most detailed brainstem atlas created to date.
Advanced Multimodal Technology
The atlas has been developed using a multimodal framework that integrates Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), histology, and detailed chemo-architecture. This combination provides an exceptionally accurate representation of the brainstem's structure and neurochemical composition.
High-Resolution Cellular Imaging
The reconstruction uses eight complementary immunostains applied across more than 500 serial sections, enabling precise visualization of neurons and neural pathways. ANCHOR allows users to zoom nearly 1,000 times closer than conventional MRI, making it possible to observe brain cells at the micron level.
Developmental Brain Atlas
The atlas provides detailed information on the human brainstem from the fetal stage to adulthood, helping researchers understand how the brain develops, matures, and changes over time.
