About Zojila Pass

Zojila Pass, often referred to as the “Mountain Pass of Blizzards,” is a high-altitude mountain pass located in the Kargil district of Ladakh. It lies on the strategically important Srinagar–Kargil–Leh highway (NH-1) at an altitude of approximately 11,650 feet.

The pass is part of the Greater Himalayan Range and serves as a crucial link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region. Due to heavy snowfall and harsh climatic conditions, it remains closed for nearly half of the year, affecting connectivity and logistics.

Historical Significance

Zojila Pass holds immense strategic importance in Indian history, particularly during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947-48. During the conflict, the pass was initially captured by militias supported by the Pakistan Army with the aim of advancing into Ladakh.

However, the Indian Army successfully recaptured it on 1st November 1948 under Operation Bison, marking a decisive military achievement in securing Ladakh.

What is an Avalanche?

An avalanche is a sudden and rapid flow of a large mass of snow down a mountain slope. It is a highly dangerous natural hazard, as it can bury, destroy, or sweep away everything in its path within seconds.

Avalanches are more likely to occur when snow layers are unstable, especially when there is a weak layer beneath heavier snow. They are also common on slopes lacking trees or rocks, as such features usually help to anchor the snow and prevent it from sliding.
