Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM)

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is making progress in developing an indigenous Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) to strengthen the air-defence capabilities of Indian warships.

About VL-SRSAM

The VL-SRSAM is an indigenously developed Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SRSAM) designed and developed by the DRDO for the Indian Navy.

It is primarily a ship-based air-defence weapon designed to neutralise aerial threats at close ranges. Its major objective is to intercept sea-skimming targets, such as missiles and drones that fly close to the ocean surface to evade early radar detection.

Key Features of VL-SRSAM

1. Technical Specifications

The missile has a length of 3.93 metres, a diameter of 178 mm and a wingspan of 508 mm. It is powered by a solid-propellant rocket motor and can achieve speeds of up to Mach 4.

According to the provided information, it has an operational range of up to 80 km and can engage targets at altitudes of up to 16 km.

2. Vertical Launch Capability

One of the most important features of VL-SRSAM is its vertical launch capability. The missile is fired vertically from a canister-based launcher before turning towards its designated target.

This system provides 360-degree engagement capability, allowing a warship to respond to threats approaching from different directions without rotating the vessel or mechanically repositioning the launcher.

3. Multi-Function Radar (MFR)

The missile system relies on a Multi-Function Radar (MFR) equipped with Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology.

The radar scans the surrounding airspace, detects and identifies potential threats, prioritises targets and provides information to the Weapon Control Computer (WCC).

4. Indigenous Radio Frequency Seeker

During the terminal phase of flight, an indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker guides the missile towards its target with high accuracy.

This enables the missile to engage aerial threats effectively, including those that may be difficult to detect because of their low-altitude flight profiles.

Strategic Significance

1. Strengthening Naval Air Defence

VL-SRSAM will enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to protect warships against anti-ship missiles, drones and other aerial threats, particularly those approaching at low altitudes.

2. Countering Sea-Skimming Missiles

Sea-skimming missiles fly close to the ocean surface, making them difficult to detect early because of radar-horizon limitations. A rapid-response ship-based air-defence system is therefore important for protecting naval vessels.

3. Promoting Indigenous Defence Technology

The development of VL-SRSAM supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing by strengthening India's indigenous missile-development capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign weapon systems.
