Researchers have recently rediscovered Vaccinium piliferum in the remote forests of Vijoynagar in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, nearly 188 years after its first recorded observation.
About Vaccinium piliferum
Vaccinium piliferum is a rare and endangered wild relative of blueberry species. It belongs to the Ericaceae (heath) family, which also includes blueberries, cranberries, and bilberries. The species is native to the Eastern Himalayan region and is considered an important component of the area's unique plant diversity.
The plant was originally documented in 1836 during the colonial period but had not been recorded subsequently for nearly two centuries. Its recent rediscovery near the tributaries of the Noa-Dihing River in the dense forests of Arunachal Pradesh highlights the rich but underexplored biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas.
Conservation Status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified Vaccinium piliferum as an Endangered (EN) species, indicating that it faces a very high risk of extinction in the wild.
Key Facts about Blueberries
Blueberries belong to the Ericaceae (heath) family and comprise several species and varieties. Important types include Lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), and Bilberry or Forest Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus).
Blueberry plants require a relatively cold climate, needing 150 to 1200 chilling hours to break dormancy and ensure proper flowering and fruiting. They grow best in well-drained, acidic, sandy loam soils with an organic matter content exceeding 3 percent. Extremely low temperatures, however, can damage shoots and flower buds.
Nutritional Importance
Blueberries are rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and dietary fibre. They are also known for their high concentration of antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals and contribute to overall health benefits.
