About Uturuncu Volcano

Uturuncu Volcano is a large dormant volcano located in southwestern Bolivia within the Andes Mountains, the world's longest continental mountain range. Rising prominently above the surrounding Altiplano plateau, Uturuncu is one of the most remarkable volcanic features in South America.

The volcano has gained international scientific attention because, despite being considered extinct for a long time, it continues to exhibit signs of underground activity. For this reason, geologists often refer to it as a "zombie volcano"—a volcano that appears geologically dead but still shows evidence of internal movement and unrest.

At an elevation of approximately 6,008 metres (19,711 feet) above sea level, Uturuncu is the highest mountain in southern Bolivia and one of the tallest volcanic peaks in the Andes.

Geological Characteristics

Uturuncu is classified as a stratovolcano, a type of volcano formed by successive layers of lava, ash, and volcanic debris accumulated over long periods of time.

The volcano is dominated by dacitic lava domes and lava flows. Dacitic magma is relatively rich in silica, making it highly viscous. Such magma tends to trap gases, increasing the potential for explosive eruptions when volcanic activity resumes.

Eruptive History

The last known eruption of Uturuncu occurred approximately 250,000 years ago. Since then, no major eruption has been recorded, leading scientists to classify it as a dormant volcano rather than an active one.

However, the long period of inactivity does not necessarily mean the volcanic system is extinct. Modern geological studies have revealed continuing activity beneath the volcano, suggesting that the magmatic system remains alive at depth.

The Altiplano-Puna Magma Body

One of the most fascinating aspects of Uturuncu Volcano is the enormous magma reservoir located beneath it.

At a depth of roughly 10 to 20 kilometres, scientists have identified the Altiplano-Puna Magma Body (APMB), a gigantic underground reservoir of molten and partially molten rock.

This magma body extends over an area of nearly 200 kilometres and is considered the largest known active magma body within the Earth's continental crust.

The APMB acts as the primary source of heat and magma for volcanic systems in the surrounding region. Its presence explains the ongoing seismic and geological activity observed beneath Uturuncu despite the absence of recent eruptions.

The Unique “Sombrero” Deformation Pattern

One of the most distinctive geological features associated with Uturuncu is its unusual "sombrero" deformation pattern.

Satellite observations and ground-based measurements have shown that the central portion of the volcano is gradually rising, while the surrounding areas are simultaneously sinking.

This pattern resembles the shape of a traditional Mexican sombrero hat, with an elevated central crown surrounded by a depressed brim.

Scientists believe this deformation is caused by the movement of magma, fluids, and gases within the underground magma system. The phenomenon indicates that the volcanic plumbing system remains dynamic and continues to evolve.

Seismic Activity

Despite its long dormancy, Uturuncu experiences considerable seismic activity.

The volcano records hundreds of small earthquakes every year, indicating that the crust beneath it remains active. Most of these earthquakes are too weak to be felt by humans but provide important clues regarding magma movement and subsurface fluid circulation.

The recent increase in scientific concern stems from evidence suggesting that new batches of hot magma may be ascending from deeper levels of the Earth's crust. Such magma movements can alter pressure conditions within the volcanic system and potentially increase the likelihood of future eruptions.

Why is Uturuncu Called a “Zombie Volcano”?

Uturuncu is popularly known as a "zombie volcano" because it exhibits signs of geological life despite having remained dormant for about 250,000 years.

Most volcanoes inactive for such a long period are generally considered extinct or geologically dead. However, Uturuncu continues to display:

  • Persistent seismic activity;

  • Ground deformation;

  • Magma movement at depth; and

  • Hydrothermal and geothermal processes.

These characteristics suggest that the volcano is not entirely inactive, giving rise to its nickname.

The term highlights the unusual nature of the volcano and the challenges scientists face in determining whether it could eventually erupt again.

Scientific Significance

Uturuncu Volcano is regarded as one of the world's most important sites for volcanological research.

The volcano provides scientists with a rare opportunity to study:

  • Long-term magma storage systems;

  • Crustal deformation processes;

  • Seismic activity associated with dormant volcanoes;

  • Evolution of large continental magma reservoirs; and

  • Mechanisms that may reactivate ancient volcanic systems.
