The dialogue reflects the growing strategic partnership between the two countries under India's Act East Policy and the vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Location

Thailand is located in the centre of mainland Southeast Asia, making it a strategic gateway connecting South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Indo-Pacific region. Due to its central location, it serves as an important hub for regional trade, connectivity, and maritime commerce.

Its capital city is Bangkok, which is the country's largest city as well as its political, economic, cultural, and commercial centre.

Thailand shares international borders with Myanmar to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south.

Maritime Boundaries

Thailand is bordered by the Andaman Sea to the southwest and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. These water bodies provide access to the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, making Thailand strategically important for regional maritime trade and security.

Physical Features

Relief and Terrain

• Thailand's physical landscape is highly diverse. The northern and western regions are dominated by fold mountains, while the central region consists of the fertile Chao Phraya River Basin, often referred to as the "Rice Bowl of Thailand" due to its highly productive agricultural land.

• The northeastern region is occupied by the Khorat Plateau, a vast tableland bounded by the Mekong River along its northern and eastern sides.

• The southern peninsula is narrow and mountainous, extending towards Malaysia and separating the Andaman Sea from the Gulf of Thailand.

Highest Peak

The highest mountain in Thailand is Doi Inthanon, which rises to approximately 2,565 metres above sea level. It is located within Doi Inthanon National Park in northern Thailand and is popularly known as the "Roof of Thailand."

Climate

Thailand experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with its weather largely influenced by the Southwest Monsoon and the Northeast Monsoon.

The Southwest Monsoon brings heavy rainfall from May to October, while the Northeast Monsoon brings relatively cool and dry weather from November to February. The months between March and May are generally the hottest period of the year.

Major Rivers

The Chao Phraya River is Thailand's most important river. It flows through the central plains, supports intensive agriculture, and passes through Bangkok before emptying into the Gulf of Thailand.

Another major river is the Mekong River, which forms a significant portion of Thailand's border with Laos. The Mekong is one of Asia's longest rivers and is crucial for agriculture, fisheries, transport, and regional cooperation.

Natural Resources

Thailand possesses abundant natural resources that contribute significantly to its economy. These include rubber, rice, natural gas, tin, timber, tungsten, and tantalum.

Thailand is also one of the world's leading producers and exporters of natural rubber, while rice remains one of its principal agricultural exports.

Strategic Importance

• Thailand occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, making it an important partner in regional connectivity and Indo-Pacific security.

• For India, Thailand is a key pillar of the Act East Policy, the ASEAN partnership, and the BIMSTEC framework. Both countries cooperate in defence, maritime security, trade, tourism, counter-terrorism, and connectivity initiatives.

• Thailand also plays an important role in promoting regional stability through organisations such as ASEAN, Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC), and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
