The Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) has issued the Letter of Award (LoA) to a joint venture involving Patel Engineering Ltd. (PEL) for implementing an irrigation project under the Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme in Maharashtra. The project aims to strengthen irrigation infrastructure and improve agricultural productivity in Satara district.

About Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme

• The Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme is an important irrigation infrastructure project being implemented in Satara district of Maharashtra under the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC).

• The scheme has been designed to improve water availability, expand irrigation coverage, and promote sustainable agricultural development in water-deficient areas.

• The project will develop a comprehensive pressurised water distribution network covering a command area of approximately 2,277 hectares across six villages in Satara Taluka.

• These villages include Tasgaon, Varne, Karandwadi, Devkarwadi, Degaon, and Nigadi. By ensuring a reliable supply of irrigation water, the scheme is expected to enhance agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods, and strengthen long-term water security in the region.

What is Lift Irrigation?

• Lift irrigation is an irrigation system in which water is mechanically lifted from a river, reservoir, canal, or other water source to higher elevations using electrically powered pumps.

• Unlike gravity-fed canal irrigation, where water naturally flows downhill, lift irrigation is specifically designed for areas where agricultural land lies at a higher altitude than the water source.

• The lifted water is transported through pressurised pipelines and distributed efficiently to agricultural fields. Such systems are particularly useful in plateau regions, undulating terrain, and drought-prone areas, where conventional gravity irrigation is not feasible.

Major Components of the Scheme

• The Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme comprises several critical engineering components that ensure efficient water lifting, transmission, and distribution.

• The project includes the construction of head works, which facilitate the intake of water from the source. Pump houses equipped with high-capacity pumps will lift the water to higher elevations, while switch yards will ensure uninterrupted electrical power for pump operations.

• The lifted water will then be conveyed through rising mains, which are specialised pipelines designed to transport water uphill under pressure.

• Delivery chambers will regulate and distribute the water to different sections of the irrigation network.

• Finally, the scheme will establish a closed-pipe distribution network, which minimises water losses due to evaporation, seepage, and leakage while ensuring efficient and equitable water supply to farmers.

Significance of the Scheme

• The Tasgaon Lift Irrigation Scheme is expected to substantially improve irrigation access across the command area, enabling farmers to cultivate crops more reliably throughout the year. Enhanced water availability is likely to increase agricultural productivity, diversify cropping patterns, and reduce dependence on uncertain monsoon rainfall.
