Recently, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change directed authorities to take action against illegal sand mining in the Subarnarekha River in Odisha.
Origin and Course of the River
The Subarnarekha River originates near Nagri village in the Ranchi district of Jharkhand at an elevation of about 600 metres. It flows eastward for nearly 395 kilometres before finally emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
The river derives its name, meaning “Streak of Gold,” from its flow through mineral-rich regions, particularly areas known for copper deposits. It also passes through the Chota Nagpur Plateau, leaving it via the scenic Hundrugbagh waterfall.
The river flows through mineral-rich terrain, giving it both economic and geographical significance.
River Basin and Geographical Extent
The basin of the Subarnarekha River extends across the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, and a smaller part of West Bengal. It is bounded by the Chota Nagpur Plateau in the north and west, ridges separating it from the Baitarani River basin in the south, the Bay of Bengal in the southeast, and the valley of the Kangsabati River in the east.
The basin is largely influenced by the South-West monsoon, which brings rainfall from June to October.
