Recently, scientists discovered that the Shellear fish can climb a vertical waterfall nearly 15 metres (50 feet) high in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
About Shellear Fish
The Shellear fish is scientifically known as Parakneria thysi. It is a rare freshwater fish species found in the upper Congo Basin, especially around the Luvilombo Falls on the Luvilombo River.
The fish belongs to a group of freshwater species that have developed unique physical adaptations to survive in fast-flowing river systems.
Habitat and Distribution
Parakneria thysi is a benthopelagic freshwater species, meaning it lives and feeds near the bottom as well as in the middle layers of freshwater bodies.
It is mainly found in the rivers and waterfalls of the upper Congo Basin in Central Africa. The species is specially adapted to survive in areas with strong water currents and rocky surfaces.
Physical Features
The Shellear fish is very small in size. Most individuals measure about 37–48 millimetres in length, although they can grow up to approximately 96 millimetres.
Despite their tiny size, these fish possess extraordinary climbing abilities that allow them to scale steep waterfalls such as the Luvilombo Falls.
Climbing Adaptations
One of the most unique features of the Shellear fish is its ability to climb vertical rock surfaces against fast-flowing water.

The fish has tiny hook-like projections on specialized pads located on its pectoral and pelvic fins.

Threats to the Species
Scientists have identified two major threats to the survival of the Shellear fish.

One major threat is the use of fine-mesh mosquito nets for illegal fishing. These nets can easily trap and capture the small-sized fish, reducing their population.
Water Extraction
Another major threat is excessive water extraction for irrigation. In some years, heavy water withdrawal has significantly reduced the water level of the Luvilombo River, affecting the natural habitat of the species.
