The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) recently inaugurated critical trunk utility and amenity infrastructure for the Indian Navy under Project Seabird Phase IIA at the naval base in Karwar, Karnataka.

About Project Seabird

Project Seabird is India's largest naval infrastructure project. It involves the development and expansion of a major naval base at Karwar on the west coast of India, in Karnataka.

The project is intended to strengthen the Indian Navy's operational capabilities by providing modern infrastructure for warships, submarines, aircraft and naval personnel.

The project covers approximately 11,000 acres and includes specialised facilities such as a ship lift and a transfer system for docking and undocking ships and submarines.

Phases of Project Seabird

Phase I

The first phase involved the construction of a deep-sea harbour, breakwaters, dredging facilities, a township, a naval hospital, a dockyard uplift centre and a ship lift.

Phase I was commissioned in 2005, providing the foundation for the development of the naval base.

Phase IIA and Phase IIB

The development of Phase II of INS Kadamba commenced in 2011. This phase was divided into Phase IIA and Phase IIB to expand the naval base's infrastructure and operational capacity.

The expansion includes facilities to accommodate additional warships, a new Naval Air Station and supporting infrastructure for naval operations.

Phase IIA includes the development of essential utility and amenity infrastructure required to support the growing needs of the naval base.

Strategic Significance of Project Seabird

Strengthening Naval Capabilities

The project will provide the Indian Navy with modern facilities to accommodate and maintain a larger fleet of warships and submarines, enhancing operational readiness.

Enhancing Maritime Security

Karwar's location on India's western coast makes it strategically important for maritime security and naval operations in the Arabian Sea and the wider Indian Ocean Region.

Reducing Pressure on Existing Naval Bases

The expansion will provide additional berthing, maintenance and support facilities, helping reduce pressure on existing naval infrastructure.

Supporting Long-Term Naval Expansion

Once the planned expansion is completed, the naval base is expected to accommodate approximately 32 warships and 23 submarines, along with hangars for several aircraft.

The completed project is intended to make Karwar one of the largest naval bases in the Eastern Hemisphere.
