Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

stylish_lining

Recently, the National Board for Wildlife approved a proposal of the Assam Government to rationalise the boundary of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. This decision aims to improve habitat management and strengthen conservation measures in the sanctuary.

Location and Establishment

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the state of Assam. It was established in 1998 to protect the rich biodiversity of the Brahmaputra floodplain region.

The sanctuary includes:

  • Rajamayong Reserve Forest

  • Pobitora Reserve Forest

It lies in an ecologically important area once part of the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, known for fertile soil and diverse ecosystems.

Vegetation and Habitat

The sanctuary is primarily composed of alluvial grasslands and wet savannah ecosystems, which support a wide variety of wildlife.

The major vegetation includes:

  • Tall elephant grass

  • Arundo donax

  • Erianthus ravennae

  • Phragmites karka

  • Imperata cylindrica

  • Saccharum species

A major environmental concern in the sanctuary is the spread of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), which forms dense mats over water bodies and disrupts aquatic ecosystems, particularly affecting waterfowl.

Fauna (Wildlife)

The most significant feature of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is that it has the highest density of the Greater one-horned rhinoceros in India.

Other important species found here include:

  • Leopards

  • Wild boar

  • Barking deer

  • Wild buffalo

This makes the sanctuary a critical stronghold for rhino conservation in India.

Conservation Significance

The sanctuary is ecologically important because:

  • It plays a key role in the conservation of the Greater one-horned rhinoceros.

  • It forms part of the Brahmaputra floodplain ecosystem, which is highly productive but ecologically sensitive.

  • The boundary rationalisation is expected to reduce human–wildlife conflict and improve ecological protection.

Conclusion

The approval by the National Board for Wildlife to rationalise the boundary of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a significant step toward strengthening conservation efforts. With its exceptionally high rhino density and fragile floodplain ecosystem, the sanctuary remains a vital biodiversity hotspot requiring focused protection and sustainable management
