One of the easiest ways to distinguish hoverflies from bees and wasps is by observing their wings. Hoverflies possess only one pair of wings, whereas bees and wasps have two pairs of wings.
They also exhibit the typical characteristics of true flies, including short antennae, large bulbous compound eyes, and a relatively flattened body measuring approximately 4–10 millimetres in length.
