About National Technology Day (NTD)
National Technology Day (NTD) is celebrated in India every year on 11 May. The day commemorates the successful conduct of Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, which marked a defining moment in India's scientific and strategic history.
Apart from remembering this historic achievement, the occasion also serves to acknowledge India's progress in the fields of science, technology, innovation, and research. It honours the efforts of scientists, engineers, technologists, and entrepreneurs whose contributions have strengthened the country's technological self-reliance and development.
History of National Technology Day
On 11 May 1998, India achieved a major technological and strategic breakthrough by successfully conducting a series of underground nuclear tests at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. The tests were carried out under the code name "Operation Shakti" and were led by eminent scientists, including Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who was then serving as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
During the first phase of the operation, three underground nuclear tests were conducted on 11 May 1998. Subsequently, two additional nuclear tests were carried out on 13 May 1998, completing the series.
These successful tests demonstrated India's indigenous scientific capabilities and established the country as the sixth nation in the world to possess demonstrated nuclear weapons capability, thereby enabling India to join the group informally referred to as the "Nuclear Club."
Other Significant Technological Achievements on 11 May 1998
The significance of 11 May 1998 extends beyond the Pokhran nuclear tests. On the same day, India recorded two other notable technological achievements.
India successfully conducted the test firing of the Trishul missile, an indigenously developed short-range surface-to-air missile designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
In addition, the country successfully test-flew the "Hansa-3" aircraft, the first indigenous two-seater general aviation aircraft developed by the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL). The aircraft was designed primarily for pilot training, aerial surveillance, and other civil aviation applications.
These accomplishments collectively highlighted India's growing strength in the fields of nuclear science, defence technology, and aerospace engineering.
Declaration of National Technology Day
Recognising the historic significance of these achievements, the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, officially declared 11 May as National Technology Day in 1998.
The first formal celebration of the day took place in 1999, and since then, it has been observed annually across the country to celebrate India's technological progress and inspire future generations of innovators.
Role of the Technology Development Board (TDB)
The Technology Development Board (TDB), a statutory body functioning under the Ministry of Science and Technology, plays an important role in the observance of National Technology Day.
Every year, the Board organises commemorative events and presents National Awards to individuals and institutions in recognition of their outstanding contributions to science, technology, and innovation in India.
The TDB was established under the provisions of the Technology Development Board Act, 1995, with the objective of promoting the development and commercialisation of indigenous technologies.
