About Namdapha Tiger Reserve

Namdapha Tiger Reserve is located in Arunachal Pradesh. It is named after the Namdapha River, which originates from Daphabum, the highest mountain peak in the reserve.

The area was originally classified as a Reserved Forest and was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1972. Subsequently, it was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1983 under the Project Tiger scheme.

Geographical Features and Topography

The reserve is characterised by high hills, dense vegetation, numerous rivers and seasonal streams. Its varied topography supports rich biodiversity and diverse wildlife habitats.

Vegetation and Flora

The vegetation of Namdapha Tiger Reserve is predominantly characterised by tropical evergreen rainforests with a dense and multi-layered forest structure.

The forests contain thick growth of bamboo, cane, wild banana and other undergrowth, making certain areas almost impenetrable.

Namdapha is particularly significant for its diversity of wild cats. It is home to four major cat species:

  • Tiger

  • Leopard

  • Clouded Leopard

  • Snow Leopard

Other important wildlife species found in the reserve include the Hoolock Gibbon, Golden Cat, Marbled Cat, Mishmi Takin, Red Panda and Namdapha Flying Squirrel.
