About Madura Island
Madura Island is an Indonesian island located off the northeastern coast of Java. It is separated from Java by the Madura Strait.
The island covers an area of about 5,290 sq. km and has a predominantly flat landscape, without major mountains.
People and Culture
Madura is predominantly inhabited by the Madurese people, with around 3.6–4 million Madurese living on the island. The Madurese are one of the major ethnic groups of Indonesia, and Madurese is the principal language spoken there.
The island is famous for its traditional bull races, conducted annually after the harvest.
Major Towns
The important towns of Madura Island include Bangkalan in the west, followed by Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep towards the east.
Economy
The major economic activities include cattle rearing and salt production. Madura is popularly known as the “Salt Island” because of its extensive salt production.
Other important products include kapok, copra, coconut oil and teak, particularly from forests in the northwestern part of the island.
