The U.S. drugmaker Pfizer and France’s Valneva have reported that their experimental Lyme disease vaccine has shown more than 70% efficacy in late-stage clinical trials, marking a significant step toward prevention of the disease.
About Lyme Disease
Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It can affect multiple organs, including the skin, nervous system, heart, and joints.
The disease was first identified in Lyme, United States, in 1976, after cases were observed in children with unusual joint symptoms.
Transmission of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected deer ticks (black-legged ticks). These ticks are commonly found in grassy, wooded, or bushy areas, where they can attach to human skin unnoticed.
Importantly, not all tick bites cause infection, and only specific infected ticks can transmit the bacteria. The disease does not spread from person to person, nor through air, food, water, or animals such as pets. Insects like mosquitoes, fleas, or lice also do not transmit Lyme disease.
Symptoms of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease typically progresses in stages, and symptoms may overlap.
In early stages, a common sign is a red circular rash, often described as a “bull’s-eye” pattern around the bite area. Other early symptoms include fever, fatigue, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
If left untreated, the infection can progress and lead to severe joint inflammation (arthritis) as well as neurological and cardiac complications.
Treatment and Recovery
Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated effectively with antibiotics, especially when diagnosed early. However, recovery may take time in some patients. In cases where treatment is delayed, some symptoms may persist even after infection is cleared.
Conclusion
Lyme disease is a tick-borne bacterial infection that can cause serious health complications if untreated. The development of a vaccine candidate with over 70% efficacy by Pfizer and Valneva represents a promising advancement in preventive healthcare, especially for regions where the disease is prevalent.
