LignoSat is a tiny cuboid satellite measuring 10 cm on each side, made from magnolia wood.

  • It was developed through a collaboration between researchers from Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry in Japan.
  • The main goals of LignoSat are to promote the eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness of using wood for satellite construction.
  • LignoSat is designed to completely burn up upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, releasing only water vapor and carbon dioxide, in an effort to combat space debris and pollution.
  • LignoSat is scheduled to be launched on a SpaceX rocket in September 2024 and will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS).
  • The use of a natural, biodegradable material like wood for satellite construction is an innovative approach aimed at making space exploration and technology more environmentally sustainable.
