Why in News?

A 1,256-MW nuclear reactor located on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Ohio has unintentionally become a wildlife refuge. Its 1,100-acre buffer zone provides habitat and nesting grounds for threatened spotted turtles.

About Lake Erie

Lake Erie is the fourth-largest and southernmost of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is also the warmest, shallowest and smallest of the Great Lakes by volume.

Despite its relatively small size, Lake Erie is considered the most productive of the Great Lakes.

The lake was named after the Erie Indians, who historically lived along its shores.

Geographical Location

Lake Erie forms part of the international boundary between Canada and the United States. Ontario lies to its north, while the United States surrounds its western, southern and eastern sides.

It is located south of Lake Huron and is bordered by Lake Ontario to the east and Lake Michigan to the northwest.

The lake has a surface area of approximately 25,874 sq. km. Globally, it is the 11th-largest lake by both surface area and volume.

Rivers and Drainage

The principal tributaries of Lake Erie include the Detroit River, which carries the discharge of Lake Huron, along with the Huron River and Raisin River of Michigan.

Lake Erie drains into Lake Ontario through the Niagara River.

Thus, the lake forms an important link in the drainage system of the Great Lakes–Saint Lawrence system.

Islands and Ports

The western part of Lake Erie contains several islands, of which Pelee Island is the largest.

The lake has four major ports: Detroit in Michigan, Cleveland and Toledo in Ohio, and Buffalo in New York.

Lake Erie is also an important component of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, which connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.

Biodiversity of Lake Erie

Lake Erie supports considerable biodiversity. It is home to more than 10,000 Lake Erie water snakes, along with millions of mayflies.

Several bird species are also associated with the lake, including common red-breasted mergansers, grebes, loons, ring-billed gulls, diving ducks and herring gulls.

Lake Erie has the most abundant fish species among the Great Lakes, supported by its plentiful plankton and relatively mild temperatures. It accounts for more than half of the fish population of the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes of North America

The Great Lakes are five large freshwater lakes located in eastern North America. They are Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Together, they cover an area of approximately 245,660 sq. km and form the largest connected area of freshwater on Earth.

Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States. The other four Great Lakes form part of the natural border between Canada and the United States.

Among the five lakes, Lake Superior is the largest and deepest, while Lake Ontario is the smallest.
