The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is a statutory body established under the Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act, 1956. It functions under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

KVIC is responsible for the planning, promotion, organisation and implementation of programmes aimed at developing khadi and other village industries in rural areas. It plays an important role in promoting rural livelihoods, generating employment and strengthening the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Organisational Structure

KVIC operates at the national level, while Khadi and Village Industries Boards have been established at the state level to facilitate the implementation of its schemes and programmes in their respective states.

This institutional framework supports the development of village industries and promotes employment opportunities in rural areas.

Objectives of KVIC

Social Objective

KVIC aims to generate employment in rural areas, particularly for people who depend on traditional industries and local livelihoods.

Economic Objective

It seeks to produce saleable goods through khadi and village industries, thereby supporting rural production, income generation and economic development.

Wider Objective

KVIC aims to promote self-reliance among economically weaker sections by encouraging local production, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Functions of KVIC

Raw Material and Equipment Support

KVIC works towards creating a strategic reserve of raw materials and implements to ensure their availability to producers engaged in khadi and village industries.

Processing and Common Service Facilities

It promotes common service facilities for processing raw materials into semi-finished goods. It also supports facilities required for processing and marketing products made by village industries.

Marketing and Promotion

KVIC works to enhance the sale and marketing of khadi products, village-industry goods and handicrafts. These efforts help producers access markets and improve the commercial viability of their products.

Research and Development

The Commission encourages and promotes research into production techniques to improve productivity, quality and the efficiency of khadi and village industries.

Quality Standards and Product Authenticity

KVIC works to ensure the genuineness of khadi products and establish quality standards for products associated with khadi and village industries.

Significance of KVIC

KVIC contributes to rural development by supporting traditional industries, local entrepreneurship and employment generation. It also helps preserve traditional skills, promote indigenous products and strengthen rural economic self-reliance.

Its activities support the broader objectives of inclusive growth, sustainable livelihoods and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
