INS Shreyas was recently launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. for the Indian Navy. It is the third of four Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) being built under the programme.

About INS Shreyas

INS Shreyas is a next-generation offshore patrol vessel being constructed by GRSE Ltd., a defence public sector undertaking, for the Indian Navy.

The vessel's name, Shreyas, is derived from Sanskrit and means “Best” or “Most Excellent.” The names of these vessels reflect India's rich cultural heritage.

Key Features of INS Shreyas

Dimensions

The vessel measures approximately 113 metres in length and 14.6 metres in width, making it suitable for extended maritime patrol and surveillance operations.

Speed and Endurance

INS Shreyas is designed to achieve a maximum speed of 23 knots and an endurance of approximately 8,500 nautical miles. These capabilities will allow it to undertake extended missions across India's maritime zones.

Operational Capabilities

The Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels are designed to perform a wide range of maritime security tasks, including coastal and offshore asset protection, maritime interdiction, surveillance, mine warfare and special operations.

These vessels will strengthen the Indian Navy's ability to monitor maritime areas, protect offshore infrastructure and respond to emerging maritime security threats.

Strategic Significance

Strengthening Maritime Security

INS Shreyas will contribute to the protection of India's coastline, offshore installations and maritime approaches.

Enhancing Surveillance Capabilities

Its long endurance and offshore patrol capability will support sustained surveillance and maritime domain awareness.

Promoting Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

Construction by GRSE Ltd. supports India's domestic shipbuilding industry and the broader objective of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.
