Recently, INS Kolkata successfully responded to a suspected piracy threat involving the merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1 in the Western Indian Ocean, preventing a possible hijacking attempt amid growing maritime security concerns in the region.

About INS Kolkata

INS Kolkata is the lead ship of the Kolkata-class (Project 15A) guided missile destroyers of the Indian Navy. The Project 15A destroyers are advanced successors to the Project 15 Delhi-class destroyers, which entered service during the late 1990s.

The warships were conceived and designed by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) of the Indian Navy and have been named after major Indian port cities—Kolkata, Kochi, and Chennai.

INS Kolkata was constructed by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), Mumbai, and was commissioned into the Indian Navy in August 2014.

Physical Characteristics

INS Kolkata measures 164 metres in length and 18 metres in width, with a full-load displacement of 7,400 tonnes. It is among the most advanced indigenous warships built by India and significantly enhances the Navy's blue-water operational capabilities.

The ship carries a complement of approximately 30 officers and 300 sailors, enabling sustained operations across the Indian Ocean Region.

Propulsion System

The destroyer operates on a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) propulsion system, comprising four reversible gas turbines. This powerful propulsion arrangement enables the vessel to attain speeds of more than 30 knots, ensuring rapid deployment and operational flexibility.

The ship's electrical requirements are met through four gas-turbine generators and one diesel alternator, producing around 4.5 megawatts of power, sufficient to support its sophisticated electronic and combat systems.

Combat Capabilities

INS Kolkata is equipped with a comprehensive range of modern weapon systems, making it a potent multi-role combat platform.

Its armament includes anti-aircraft missiles, anti-surface missiles, medium-range and short-range guns, and advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems. The vessel also possesses bow-mounted sonar for underwater surveillance and detection.

The ship is capable of undertaking air defence, anti-surface, anti-submarine, and maritime security operations, making it one of the Indian Navy's principal frontline warships.

Sensors and Electronic Systems

INS Kolkata is fitted with advanced air and surface surveillance radars, sophisticated communication systems, and integrated combat-management technologies.

The ship is often described as a "Network of Networks" because of its highly integrated digital architecture, which includes:

• ATM-based Integrated Ship Data Network (AISDN)

• Auxiliary Control System (ACS)

• Automatic Power Management System (APMS)

• Combat Management System (CMS)

These systems enable seamless coordination among sensors, weapons, propulsion, and communication networks, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and combat effectiveness.

Aviation Capability

INS Kolkata can operate two helicopters simultaneously, including Sea King and Chetak helicopters. These aircraft substantially enhance the ship's capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, maritime reconnaissance, search and rescue operations, and surveillance missions.

Strategic Importance

As an indigenously designed and built destroyer, INS Kolkata symbolizes India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and its expanding maritime capabilities. The vessel plays a crucial role in safeguarding India's interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), conducting anti-piracy missions, ensuring maritime security, and contributing to regional stability.
