The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) recently opened the floodgates of Himayat Sagar Reservoir and released water downstream following increased inflows due to rainfall in its catchment areas.
Location and Origin
Himayat Sagar Lake is an artificial reservoir located about 20 km from Hyderabad, Telangana. It was constructed across the Esi River, a tributary of the Musi River, during the rule of the last Nizam of Hyderabad.
Purpose and Construction
The reservoir was constructed primarily to supply drinking water to Hyderabad and protect the city from floods. Construction was completed in 1927 under the supervision of engineer Khaja Mohinuddin. The lake was named after Himayat Ali Khan, the youngest son of the last Nizam of Hyderabad.
Key Features
The reservoir has a storage capacity of about 3.0 TMC and covers approximately 1,700 acres. It lies parallel to Osman Sagar Lake and, together with Osman Sagar, plays an important role in supplying water to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
