Glaw Lake in Lohit district, Arunachal Pradesh, has been designated as India’s 101st Ramsar Site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. It is also the first Ramsar Site of Arunachal Pradesh. The designation was announced by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on 3 August 2026.
About Glaw Lake
Glaw Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Eastern Himalayas, within the landscape of Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. It lies at an elevation of approximately 1,168 metres.
The lake is fed by perennial mountain streams and is surrounded by dense vegetation, making it an important freshwater ecosystem and biodiversity-rich wetland.
Biodiversity
The lake and its catchment support significant floral and faunal diversity. The area has recorded more than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species.
It also supports important wildlife, including endangered species such as the White-bellied Heron and Clouded Leopard.
Importance
The designation strengthens the conservation of wetlands, freshwater biodiversity and Himalayan ecosystems. It also contributes to climate resilience and the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
The Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
It was adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran, and came into force in 1975. It was the first intergovernmental treaty focused specifically on a particular ecosystem—wetlands.
Three Main Pillars
Conservation and wise use of wetlands designated as being of international importance.
Wise use of all wetlands within the territory of each contracting party.
International cooperation on shared wetlands, transboundary wetland systems and migratory species.
