The Western Ghats, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, may soon receive stronger legal protection in at least three states through the notification of Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESAs).

About Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESAs)

Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESAs), also known as Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs), are regions identified for special environmental protection due to their rich biodiversity, fragile ecosystems, and critical ecological functions. These areas are notified by the Central Government under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, to ensure that ecological conservation is balanced with sustainable development.

Legal Framework

The Central Government has the authority to declare specific regions as Ecologically Sensitive Areas under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Once an area receives ESA/ESZ status, certain activities are prohibited, some are strictly regulated, while environment-friendly activities are encouraged to prevent ecological degradation.

Regulation of Development Activities

Granting ESA status ensures that development projects within the notified region undergo stricter environmental scrutiny before receiving approval. This helps minimise environmental damage and promotes sustainable land-use planning in ecologically fragile landscapes.

Significance of Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs)

Eco-Sensitive Zones function as "shock absorbers" around Protected Areas such as National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries. They reduce the adverse impact of human activities on fragile ecosystems by creating a buffer zone between highly protected regions and areas with relatively lower levels of protection.

Role in Conservation

ESZs serve as transition zones, ensuring a gradual shift from areas requiring strict conservation to those where regulated developmental activities are permitted. They play a vital role in biodiversity conservation, habitat protection, ecological balance, and the long-term sustainability of sensitive ecosystems such as the Western Ghats.
