About Bathukamma Festival

The term “Bathukamma” translates to “Mother Goddess Come Alive”, symbolising feminine divinity, life and protection.

Folklore associated with Bathukamma connects the festival with legends of Goddess Gauri and her miraculous survival. Other traditional accounts link it to King Dhramangada and Queen Satyavati of the Chola dynasty.

Connection with the Kakatiya Dynasty

The festival is historically associated with the Kakatiya dynasty, during which traditions celebrating feminine strength and agricultural prosperity gained prominence in the region.

Time and Duration of Celebration

Bathukamma is generally celebrated during September–October according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival takes place over nine days, coinciding with the period of Durga Navratri.

The celebrations culminate in Saddula Bathukamma, also known as Pedda Bathukamma, which marks the final day of the festival.
