Two lion cubs in the Gir National Park region of Gujarat recently died due to a suspected Babesia infection, bringing attention to this tick-borne parasitic disease that affects both animals and humans.
About Babesia
Babesia is a genus of microscopic protozoan parasites that infect the red blood cells (RBCs) of animals and humans. The infection caused by these parasites is known as babesiosis. The disease is much more common in animals, particularly cattle, dogs, and other mammals, although human infections also occur.
Transmission
Babesia is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks, commonly known as deer ticks. These ticks are also responsible for transmitting other diseases, including Lyme disease. In rare cases, the infection can be transmitted from a pregnant woman to her fetus, but person-to-person transmission does not normally occur.
Geographical Distribution
The geographical distribution of Babesia is concentrated mainly in the Americas, particularly in the Northeastern United States, and also extends to parts of Europe and Asia. Human infections are more common in regions where tick populations are abundant.
Symptoms
Many infected individuals may show no symptoms or only mild symptoms. However, severe cases can cause high fever, fatigue, hemolytic anemia, and other complications arising from the destruction of red blood cells.
In serious infections, babesiosis may lead to respiratory failure, kidney failure, liver failure, heart problems, and coagulopathy, especially among immunocompromised individuals, older adults, and people without a functioning spleen.
Treatment
Babesiosis is treated using antimicrobial drugs that target the parasitic infection. The most commonly recommended treatment is a combination of Atovaquone, an antiparasitic medicine, and Azithromycin, an antibiotic. Severe cases may require more intensive medical management and supportive care.
