About Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)
The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is the Government of India’s flagship initiative to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country. It was established in 2016 and is implemented under NITI Aayog.
The mission serves as a national platform to nurture innovative ideas, support startups, and create an ecosystem that encourages scientific thinking, technological advancement, and problem-solving among students, entrepreneurs, and researchers.
Objectives of AIM
The primary objective of AIM is to foster a nationwide culture of innovation by encouraging creativity as the foundation of strategic planning across multiple sectors.
It promotes collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, industries, startups, and research organizations to build a robust innovation ecosystem.
The mission also acts as a central coordinating body for integrating and strengthening India’s technological and entrepreneurial infrastructure.
Key Initiatives under Atal Innovation Mission
Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs)
The Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs) are established in schools to nurture scientific temperament, creativity, and innovation among students.
These laboratories provide access to advanced technologies such as 3D printers, robotics kits, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, electronics, sensors, and artificial intelligence tools.
They focus on imparting practical STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education to students aged 12 years and above, enabling them to develop problem-solving skills and innovative solutions.
Atal Incubation Centres (AICs)
The Atal Incubation Centres (AICs) are designed to support startups and entrepreneurs by providing world-class incubation facilities. These centres offer infrastructure, mentorship, networking opportunities, business support, and access to funding, helping innovative ideas evolve into commercially viable enterprises.
The initiative aims to establish high-quality incubation centres in smart cities and leading educational institutions across the country to build a sustainable startup ecosystem.
Atal Research and Innovation for Small Businesses (ARISE)
The ARISE programme focuses on promoting research-driven innovation among startups and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It encourages the development of indigenous technologies and innovative products by addressing the technological needs of various Central Government Ministries and Departments. Through this initiative, AIM seeks to bridge the gap between government requirements and startup capabilities while strengthening India's innovation ecosystem.
Significance of AIM
The Atal Innovation Mission plays a crucial role in transforming India into an innovation-driven economy by promoting entrepreneurship from the school level to advanced research and business incubation. It strengthens the country's startup ecosystem, encourages technology-led solutions, supports the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and contributes to employment generation and economic growth. Through international collaborations such as the India–France ATL Bridge, AIM also enhances global innovation partnerships, knowledge exchange, and technological cooperation.
