The strategic and military world is entering a new era where Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous systems, drones, and algorithmic warfare are changing the way wars are fought. Modern conflicts are now driven more by software, data, and intelligent machines than by traditional weapons alone. For India, developing indigenous AI technologies and self-reliant defence systems has become essential for ensuring national security and strategic autonomy.

Introduction

  • Modern warfare is no longer dependent only on soldiers, tanks, aircraft, and missiles. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become one of the most powerful tools in military operations.

  • AI can analyse huge amounts of information within seconds, identify enemy targets, guide weapons accurately, and assist commanders in making faster decisions.

  • The future battlefield will be dominated by smart software, autonomous drones, advanced sensors, and real-time data sharing. Therefore, countries that develop strong AI capabilities will enjoy a major strategic advantage over others.

How is Artificial Intelligence Changing Modern Warfare?

Algorithmic Warfare and the "Kill Web"

Artificial Intelligence has greatly reduced the time between detecting an enemy target and destroying it. Earlier, this process could take several hours because information had to move through different levels of command. Today, AI can analyse data from satellites, radars, drones, and surveillance systems within minutes.

This has led to the development of "Kill Webs", where all military platforms are digitally connected. As soon as a target is identified, the most suitable weapon can be selected and used immediately. This allows faster and more accurate military operations. One well-known example is the United States' Project Maven, which uses AI to analyse drone images and quickly identify enemy targets.

Growth of Autonomous Systems

Modern armies are increasingly using autonomous machines that can perform many tasks without direct human control. These systems are used for surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics, and even combat operations.

For example, the United States has developed the YFQ-44A Fury, an AI-powered fighter aircraft that works together with human pilots. Similarly, future naval ships may also be controlled by intelligent software instead of human officers, reducing the risk to soldiers during dangerous missions.

Increasing Importance of Drone Warfare

Drones have become one of the most important weapons in modern warfare. They provide continuous surveillance, identify enemy positions, and carry out precision attacks at a much lower cost than traditional aircraft.

The Russia–Ukraine conflict has clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of drone warfare. Large areas of the battlefield are continuously monitored by drones, making it extremely difficult for tanks, vehicles, or soldiers to move without being detected. Ukraine has developed the capacity to produce more than 8 million First-Person View (FPV) drones every year, showing how rapidly drone technology is expanding.

AI in Intelligence and Electronic Warfare

Artificial Intelligence has greatly improved military intelligence by combining information from satellites, drones, radars, and sensors into one real-time operational picture.

AI also supports electronic warfare, where enemy communication systems, radars, and drones are disrupted using advanced technologies. Modern AI systems can even control high-energy laser weapons that are capable of destroying large groups of enemy drones.

AI in Logistics and Cyber Warfare

Artificial Intelligence is also making military logistics more efficient. It helps in managing supply chains, predicting equipment failures, and ensuring timely delivery of military resources.

At the same time, AI is becoming an important tool in cyber warfare, where countries use intelligent software to defend against cyberattacks or launch offensive cyber operations against adversaries.

India's Initiatives in Military AI

Project SANJAY and TRINETRA

The Indian Army has introduced Project SANJAY along with the AI-powered TRINETRA system to improve battlefield surveillance.

These systems collect information from ground sensors, drones, and satellites, combine it into a single operational picture, and provide commanders with real-time information for faster and better decision-making.

ETAI Framework

The Evaluating Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ETAI) Framework, launched by DRDO and the Chief of Defence Staff, ensures that military AI systems remain safe, reliable, transparent, and protected from cyber threats.

iDEX and ADITI Scheme

The Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) programme and the ADITI Scheme encourage Indian startups and industries to develop advanced military technologies such as AI-powered drones, quantum radar, and electronic warfare systems. These initiatives strengthen India's defence innovation ecosystem.

Operational Use of AI

The Indian Army is already using AI in several practical applications. It has developed an AI-based Driver Fatigue Detection System to improve the safety of military convoys in difficult terrain. Another system called Prakshepan predicts avalanches and floods up to one week in advance, helping soldiers operate safely in mountainous regions.

Baaz Battalions

The Army has raised specialised Baaz Battalions that focus on long-range drone surveillance and precision strikes. India is also acquiring High Altitude Pseudo Satellites (HAPS) and advanced loitering munitions to strengthen future military operations.

Challenges Before India

Technology Gap with China

China has made rapid progress in integrating Artificial Intelligence, cyber capabilities, satellites, drones, and electronic warfare into its military strategy. India must accelerate its own technological development to maintain a credible deterrence.

Lack of Integrated Military Networks

Modern warfare requires all military services to share information instantly. However, India's Army, Navy, and Air Force still operate through separate communication networks, reducing operational efficiency.

Limited Communication Infrastructure

AI-based military operations require high-speed communication networks. Difficult terrain along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and limited tactical bandwidth reduce India's ability to use AI effectively during real-time operations.

Dependence on Foreign Technology

India still depends on imported computer chips, sensors, AI software, and electronic components. Such dependence can create security risks and supply-chain disruptions during conflicts. Therefore, India needs to develop its own military AI technologies and secure data systems.

Ethical and Legal Issues

Fully autonomous weapons raise important questions about human control, accountability, civilian safety, and international humanitarian law. India currently does not have a comprehensive legal framework to regulate military AI.

Measures Needed to Strengthen India's AI Capabilities

India should develop AI-enabled border defence systems by deploying drones, laser weapons, microwave systems, and counter-drone technologies along the LoC and LAC. The country should also increase the number of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for continuous surveillance.

A National Military Data Cloud should be created to develop indigenous AI models using Indian battlefield data. Existing projects such as Project SANJAY and Akashteer should be integrated into a single Tri-Service digital network.

India should also modernise its defence procurement system by investing more in software, Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, and indigenous defence startups, instead of relying mainly on traditional weapons.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence is transforming warfare by making military operations faster, smarter, and more precise. The future of defence will depend not only on advanced weapons but also on data, software, autonomous systems, and rapid decision-making.

For India, becoming self-reliant in military AI is essential for protecting national security and maintaining strategic autonomy. By investing in indigenous technology, integrated military networks, and AI-driven defence systems, India can prepare itself for the challenges of future warfare.
